Help - how to disassemble a tilt column?
Hey all, I did not install my rubber seals when the column was apart. Now it is back together and I can't remember how the metal ring/cover around the turnsignal switch comes off. I tried a gear puller and the ring started to bend at the edges.
Pics would be great. I could not find what I was looking for doing a search here. Thanks BP

First remove the turn signal switch, with that out of the way insert a square sided screwdriver or punch through the hole in the side of the cover where the turn signal lever goes then gently pry upward, this should get it started and then you should be able to get it off by hand from that point. hope that helps, good luck

Pay attention to the "shoes" for the tilt. the 2 little grooved pieces that determine the position the tilt is locked at. one has an extra groove in it IIRC. Search Yukon Jacks posts, he had a good post on tearing one down ( including pulling the pins on the side to get to the guts)

Thread revival!
I'm tearing into the steering column on my 72 automatic w/ tilt... I've got the cover/sleeve persuaded out (separated from the bowl), but in order to fully pull it off, it need to remove the tilt lever. I can't see how it is attached or fasted to the tilt assembly/mechanism. The hazard lever and signal lever both had screws. Easy. The gear lever had a pin. Cool. But has is the tilt lever attached? Never been into one of these before. Who'd have thunk it was such a sophisticated little mechanical operation under there.

a small slide hammer (dent puller ) works good on removing the pins. be sure to remove the tilt spring first.
