How many free things can I do ?

So my truck doesn't run right now. It's a 1969 c10 lwb 2wd and has a 454 in it. It doesn't run for 3 reasons: 1) the transmission is out, but I do have a replacement. 2) the carburetor is shot and leaks really bad and do not have a replacement for it. 3) I need a special type of lug nuts that are not made.

So I guess my question is, is it possible to fix it and get it to drive for free?

I guess anything is possible, it all depends on who you know and how willing they will be to help. Ask the right people and you may be able to score some free parts, but there are also a lot of other things you may have to shell out some cash for. i have seen parts offered for free here on the forum, but you may need to pick up the shipping.

Good luck and have fun!

Re: How many free things can I do ?

I'd get on the local section of this board and ask ffor some detailed specific help what trans, what carb and defnetel what kind of lugnuts (metric- left hand thread).
no nothing is free it will ost you at LEAST a case of beer.

on a side note you couldn't pay me to install a free carb or trans.

maybe say something about why you need this stuff to be free.
and of course you gotta have pics!

The studs only stick out from the wheel only 3 or 4 threads. The lug nuts I need, need to be the long shaft style, but also needs to be tapered to seat itself in the wheel and no one out here sells what I need and I haven't found a site that has them.

What kind of wheels do you have? Got pix? If you're running aluminum wheels, there should be lug nuts that do what you need done.

I'm running 15x8 boyd coddington wheels. Not sure of the style. I got them off another truck I had gotten. I don't have pictures now, but later today I can post some.

I got rid of a set of old modular style rims that used the old style lug nuts that recessed into the wheel about 1 1/4". After stripping 5 lugs in while doing a brake job, I got rid of them and found a set of newer rims.

Re: How many free things can I do ?

Thanks for the help guys. I had a machine shop make me what I needed. Only problem, I don't have enough money for the rear sets. I guess there isn't anything I can do for free.

Re: How many free things can I do ?

You're in Idaho.Don't they have snow there you could shovel?Lawns needing work, whatever? Carb kits aren't that expensive. If the tranny is "For sure" a good one install it(even if it only lasts a couple weeks you can haul trash or whatever for a few more $$.Lug nuts may be special, but who says you have to run the wheels with special lug nuts.Swap labor to someone who has a tire machine or work so you can have the tires swapped over to stock rims(I know they make stock lug nuts).
If you're willing to work for/at it you will impress people enough to try to give you some work so you can get what you need.
There's no such thing as a free lunch, someone has to do the dishes.

Re: How many free things can I do ?

Well I started with parts from 12 different trucks my own labor and less than $250 total investment and came up with this and drove it for three years. Not including gas, insurance or tags. Thats bout as close to free as I could get. Be resourceful and you can do lots of things cheap.

Re: How many free things can I do ?

since your truck is inoperable you can't get $ by being the get-away driver so that idea is out. LOL

fancy wheels don't get you to work any better than plain steel ones. I would forget vanity and go for function.

do the tranny swap, walk down to a day labor place, fix the carb, then get a better job AND an education.

Re: How many free things can I do ?

Cdowns is right on. When I run low on funds, I start working on the elbow-grease items. Scrubbing, scraping, sanding and polishing may not be free, but cost very little.
