66 GMC Factory Paint Layouts

I have a 66 GMC that I am rebuilding and I am confused as to the layout of factory paint designs. My GMC is currently light blue with a white top (chevrolet layout) but I have noticed that pictures of other 66 GMC's have a different layout of the white. i.e. the white is on the roof only and then the white is continued on the bed rail ? Where can I find some definative info on the correct layout for the 66 GMC ?????? Ready to shoot paint in Tulsa and do not know how to lay it out.............. Kieth

Re: 66 GMC Factory Paint Layouts

I have sale brouchers for 63-64 for GMC they might be the same. ALso look up GM photostore.com they have factory pictures for Chevy and GMC that are in color that will tell you for sure what the color scheme should be.

The tu tone was available on standard models without moldings, but the white paint on cab ended at the windshield rubber.

Re: 66 GMC Factory Paint Layouts

That dosen't look right. It looks to be repainted some time ago. The paint isn't as fluid as it would be from the factory. Especially the doors and winshield blend line.

Jolly is the man when it comes to GMC trucks.

www.6066gmcguy.org

I have been all over that site, but did not notice the 2 tone paint jobs. I wasn't actually looking for it either.

Good Luck!!

Re: 66 GMC Factory Paint Layouts

wow rocktonka-jonzcuxtom that is amazing, I have never seen a truck with that paint scheme, I am at a loss as what to do, currently my gmc has a light blue main color and white was added to the roof and door tops like a 66 chevy (this was done recently) The PO also painted the firewall black and the air intake below the cowl light blue, so we are in the process of painting the firewall and other parts medium fawn poly like it came from the factory listed below are the differences in a gmc from one plant to another...THAT I CAN SEE ON MY TRUCK..

1. Medium Fawn Poly paint on firewall, door jambs, and air intake

2. 2 tone paint jobs---My truck is a std package and really came in one color only.
the 2 tone trucks look to be only available with custom trim (chrome) and the 2 tone

3. My gmc (judging from sanding) the fender wells were painted light blue from the factory not black as I have seen in some pictures.......

4. No factory Air conditioning

I am not really trying to do a totally stock build (350, 700r4, air ride) but want the truck to end up period correct on the inside and out........ This search is what makes it fun.

I LIKE GMC'S THEY ARE NOT LIKE CHEVROLETS !!!!!!

Re: 66 GMC Factory Paint Layouts

On my 61 the firewall is painted the same as the truck and the inner fender wells were satin or semi flat black.(now rust color), Though I've seen some GMC's with the firewall with the Fawn paint. I'm not sure if that was factory or a repaint though. It is very interesting doing the resaerch. Trying to figure out what all the differences were. Keeps the mind busy and some else to do while at work.

No repaint in this deal, we can see the fawn under the black and the blue on the air intake and it was still around the door jambs, when we sand it we get bare metal...........it was original .. from what i understand this was done at only certain plants as well as the black fenders in the bed were done in others. Just little differences that make it interesting.

On the white paint side of things I am going to leave it the current chevy style roof and door side design because I like it better, It would be easy to repaint like original 2 tone if I so desire. Kieth

Thanks for all the info you have been a lot of help......Kieth

Wow all of these vary in style and what was painted and what was not painted. Did the dealers get involved with this and do things like they wanted to ?? Oh by the way I chose my paint color today, we took the standard light green PPG Ditzler color, replaced the white in the formula with metalic, replaced the std yellow with transparent yellow , mixed a pint and did a test with white primer sealer and dark primer sealer. here is a picture of the results.................

http://kieth.smugmug.com/Trucks/66-G...162_Xcu73-A-LB

The one on the left actually looks better in person while in the photo it looks like the one on the right is better....shows you how you cannot trust a camera.........................Kieth

I was looking for a stock look with some pop and I think we got that. A color that will make you think it is stock but then ask yourself is that stock or custom......................
