What's the attraction?
First of all, I understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Second, I am perfectly OK with the idea that someone that owns a truck to do whatever in the world they want to it (as long as it doesn't harm somebody else). So don't read into my question something that is not there. That said, I have been following this forum for a few months and have read a good bit of the archives. After all that, I still have not been able to figure out what is the attraction of (1) lowering or "slamming" these trucks or (2) making these trucks really loud. To me, their attraction is in their perfectly balanced blend of form and function, plus a bit of nostalgia about my family truck. To alter these trucks so they can't haul a load of mulch or so they would cause a public nuisance seems to be violating their dignity somehow, to me. Call me crazy, but I feel embarassed for "rodded" trucks. But I want to keep an open mind, so I'd love to hear why other folks feel differently. I realize I probably am in the minority in feeling this way. Thanks. |

Re: What's the attraction?
I'm ambivalent. I see your point, and I partially agree n that I do prefer stock height trucks, however the only true sin of working with these "Action Line" trucks is to chop the top.

Re: What's the attraction?
I agree with you, hate to see a good truck lowered or slammed....but most are able to be put back to stock height, so no harm, no foul

Re: What's the attraction?
Here we go again...
I can understand why this question comes up, but it's a never ending banter back and forth. As long as everything stays positive this thread will stay open, so keep it clean boys and girls. Why do we paint/build our houses different? Because looking at the same thing over and over would get boring. While agree that these trucks were built to offer a great appearance, this same question has been asked among all makes and models of cars since the time the first customization was done. From straight pipes, glass packs, lowering, scallops, etc. it was how our predecessors made their vehicles their own. Would it not be for the aftermarket reproduction parts, many of the rebuilt original trucks wouldn't exist, only those lonely few original survivors.

Re: What's the attraction?
I am on a crossroads to if I want to lower my truck or not. But thats only cause I am at stage one..Which means I have a long ways to go. I live in Socal so alot of my ideas come from Lowriders. But I am not gonna go with spoke wheels/daytons. Gonna probably be lowered but not slammed on airbags. I have ideas of it being like a 3"/5" drop no notch just keep it simple and the rest looding stock. Just the same plane jane truck people are going for. Trying to keep that Original paint alive even though its gotts some major patina in spots..I dont want it to rot. What else. everyone has their rights and visions to what they want. SO much different minds out there. We are not gonna like everyones vision. but its theirs and like said above as long as its safe to you and others. I can keep going..

Re: What's the attraction?
I have built and played with drag cars/ road racing cars/ rock crawlers and I have chopped some springs. For one lowering a truck does make for a better handling vehicle
2 the parts are old and should be replaced, why not improve my aesthetics and ride quality while im at it? As far as a vehicle that is a family truck....well I didn't get mine from my old man/ so why would I want to keep it the way the last guy had it? Good chance im not finding an unmolested chevy 2wd out there. If I do its not going to be cheap if its in good shape. If it's in bad shape and stock I want to make it mine and mix parts around. There is one car that I want in stock condition to only keep it clean, and thats a porsche 911. Everthing has been put in by hand and engineered to near perfection in every aspect. A tastefully hot-rodded or stock old school chevy pickup is as american as how apple pie with a slice of american cheese on top. ****s awsome with or without the cheese Anthony |

Re: What's the attraction?
i had 71 c10 longbed lowered 2.5/4 heavy duty front and rear swaybars wider rims bigger tires overdrive tranny could still haul and tow quite a few tons of crap and it sure was a more pleasant ride when traveling 800 miles a day compared to the stock setup was

Re: What's the attraction?
If i wanted a work truck i would NEVER use anything that gains value each year, and my 05 silverado does the work. that and the family wagon (gasp) is a 10 honda pilot. as for lowered or not that is just the times, remember the 70's. (haha) look at any 2wd truck and they dont sit that high except the wanna be 4wd trucks. so long as the love for them is there, then i see no harm

Re: What's the attraction?
I have had Low trucks , I have had High trucks and Enjoyed them all . My one ton was low but the gooseneck trailer needed it to be stock so it's stock again.
I really believe that if you have an open mind you will see the cool in all trucks no matter the ride height . Couple of random pics , I see sexy in both pics |

Re: What's the attraction?
Why doesn't every painter paint the Mona Lisa!? Because they see a different beauty in thier subject.
My truck is an expression of who I am, not who you are, or who you think I should be. Thats why. |

Re: What's the attraction?
The first thing I did to my '72 was lower it, then proceeded to work the crud outta it. In 6 yrs I put 100k towing a car hauler almost daily, loaded to the gills for Pomona & Long Beach swap meets, 4x4 suburbans, '56 Cadillac, whatever. Never let me down and doin' it in style, so I would say just because it's lowered does not render a truck useless. And I'm not talking lowered 3/4 ton but a shortbed stepper.

Re: What's the attraction?
I see the "Why lower?" threads about 2 or 3 times a year, but have yet to see "Why stock?"

Re: What's the attraction?
its all about function! Ive got a Jacked Up Jimmy and working on my lowered 68. Im a hot rod kinda guy so the 68 will be a ground pounder, but not a 'trailer queen' in any form. these trucks are what i would consider a "muscle truck" so i would do to them what i would do to the 66 bench seat three speed 66 chevelle with a 6 cyl in it......make it mean lol!

If you really wanted to acquire knowledge you would spend some time educating yourself to the point of knowing that a properly lowered truck can be just as functional as a stock truck. Instead you chose to show your discern for anything that doesn't fit your idea of correctness with ludicrous comments like "I feel embarassed for "rodded" trucks." Please don't disrespect our members by posting in such an obviously biased manner. Your posts will be considered trolling, and infractions will be issued.

Re: What's the attraction?
I've got one laying frame and one sitting on 35's.
To each their own, my slammed GMC did more work as an old farm truck than most modern 4x4s so when it was retired I made it into my hot rod and sliced up the suspension to get it to lay out and look good. And with my bags I can haul just as much if not more than stock with the push of a button. My k20 burb is going to be my winter truck so it sits 4" higher and will be going up a hair higher to fit 37s with slight trimming. This one is the loudest due to the huge diesel that's in it. I can't hear the exhaust over the explosions under my hood! Anyone can restore a truck, it takes a man to cut one up!

Re: What's the attraction?
I love em stock, dropped, and raised. There are mods people do that I don't like, but I just choose to point out what I do like on their truck instead of putting down their creativity. I used to joke on some really weirdly modded trucks until I realized those people love their trucks too and took a lot of time and in some cases money to create what they wanted.

Re: What's the attraction?
I drive my 4-6" dropped truck every day, use it to tow my boat most weekends during the summer (45 min each way) to kc in sept (3 hours each way), I use it to haul my atv, mulch last week even towed a bobcat with it. I can literally push a push mower into the bed without lifting it. Great height to throw a full cooler into the bed gas cans ect.
personally I think it looks better. It rides better, stops better, goes better, and handles WAY better. It's my truck and I mod it for my use. What's cooler than a hot rod 60's truck pulling a hot rod 60's boat?

Re: What's the attraction?
Why is it that every once in awhile some enthusiasts always feel the need to put down the way others choose to build/restore/modify thier trucks. It would sure be boring if every truck out there was the same. In the end we are all here because of these trucks.
When I bought my blazer it was a very clean 72-2wd with only 63,000 miles and one repaint. The interior, engine compartment and suspension were as delivered by GM. The first thing I did was drop it 6/8 and install new 20/22" wheels. I then replaced the tired 307 with a generic 350. In the three years that I have owned it, I have put over 12,000 (summers only) miles on it. The P.O. only put 6000 miles on it over the course of 6 years. So, don't be embarrassed for my "rodded" truck cause it sure gets alot more asphalt time now that it's rodded. The same goes for the rest of my trucks. I guess what I'm trying to say is, altering doesn't make them useless, sometimes it just gives them a new purpose. Posted via Mobile Device
