Re: question!
Your vin won't show options. See if you have a SPID (Service Parts IDentification) sticker on the inside of the glovebox door. That will show your options. A buildsheet will also show options. It's a piece of paper found in the truck somewhere. Most buildsheets are long gone, but sometimes you can still find it under or behind the seat between the foam and the springs. If you have either here is a decoder for the options. http://outintheshop.com/options.html

Re: question!
Hello gm 187, I can happily decode your vin for you but it won't show the size of your motor. Only if it's a v8, v6, or i6.
T=GMC C=2 wheel drive E=V8 2=3/4 ton 4=pickup 2=1972 F=Flint Michigan assy. plant 7 is a place marker 11366=number produced So the vin tells you that your GMC came with a V8 but not what size. 402 was the only big block V8 for the 1972 trucks and it did come in 1972 GMC trucks. 1968 and 1969 trucks had 396 V8s. In 1970 the 396 went to 402 and they called it a 400(I don't know why) 1970 thru 1972 trucks had 402ci for the big block. The 402 big block was a option so it should be listed on your SPID. If so you can show your friend that the 402 came with your truck from the SPID but not the VIN. Hope this helps

Re: question!
Part of the VIN will be samped in the front of the engine if it is original. If it isn't original you can decode as to what it originally did come in.

Re: question!
Sorry to disagree but for our trucks no part of the vin is anywhere on the block. In passenger cars it was but not the trucks. There is a code on the block that will match the protect-o-plate and it tells where built, when built, and for what type of truck. But for our trucks you can't prove the engine by the vin. You can't prove the engine is original numbers matching at all, but you can remove most doubt by that date code on the front passerger side block.

Re: question!
The 402 engine was listed as a 400 ci v-8 engine on the SPID in 72

Re: question!
This is true. It was called a 400, but it was in fact a 402. This is in fact the ONLY big block offered in a 72 pick up.
