64-66 Suburban Trailer Hitch?
Found this photo from the 60-66 Suburban Pics, with hitch. Is this the original type hitch for these?
And pic from a guy in CA selling one on Craiglist. Is this an original? Thx, Roy

Re: 64-66 Suburban Trailer Hitch?
There was, to my knowledge, no factory trailer hitch for trucks 1960-66. I had a 62 Custom Accessories Book ( water damaged now ) as well as the 62 Custom Installation Manual. I have the 1963 Custom Accessories Book as well as the Custom Accessories Installation Manual. I had a 1964 GMC Custom Accessories book. None of these books manuals mention a receiver type trailer hitch. There were aftermarket trailer hitches made. I think the receiver type did not show up till in the seventies. You could order your truck with the step bumper or channel bumper that had provisions for a ball.

Chances are the hitch on the Sub is customs built. The one you found for sale could work if it measures to fit. I wouldnt give it anymore than a Class 3 rating.

Thanks. Kinda what I thought on that type hitch, but wasn't sure. My pics don't show up, did I violate forum rules with using another members truck pic to show the hitch?

Re: 64-66 Suburban Trailer Hitch?
The pictured Suburban is mine. No violations, your Ok. That one happens to be an off the shelf, universal class 3 hitch that I lightly modified for a nice fit.
I saved a picture of a hitch being sold awhile back as a possible factory unit. It's vintage for sure, but I don't think it's factory. |

Re: 64-66 Suburban Trailer Hitch?
Thanks. The hitch I installed is plenty strong for towing, no worries there... but the original drum brakes are another thing entirely. Makes me wonder how they got by back in the day.

Re: 64-66 Suburban Trailer Hitch?
Well I see this thread is old but I thought I would bring it back to life and maybe they will move into the suburban thread. I installed a Draw Tite hitch on my 66 suburban (model # 41001) today and it will clear fine when the bumper is put back on. I had to lower the gas tank to install but it was all pretty easy. Just need to hook up the wiring yet then I'll be pulling the camper shortly.
