mechanical "where to start" help needed
I was adjusting my valves (slight knocking) last night and all went well. Oh yeah...inline 6 250 CID. Had the distributor cap off to get rotor to right positions. Finished and reinstalled that cap. Now when I turn it over, the engine turns (fan moves) but it sounds like a whining with no start. My first thought was starter but if the fan is moving, doesn't that mean that the starter has engaged. I know this is probabaly a real simple thing but I am starting fresh with my Haynes manual and relearning everything that I forgot 30 years ago. Any help is greatly appreciated.

i find most valve adjustments are not neede ever with haydraulic lifters that are working properly
trouble shooting would b to undo things that you have done one at a time to find the problem

Thanks cdowns. That was the first thing I did was start backtracking and all seems good. And thanks for the 411 on the valves. I'm learning one day at a time.

I've seen more than one guy adjust his valves too tight and not have the vehicle start the next try. Also check the rotor, both to make sure you put it back and to make sure it didn't get broken.

I agree about the hydraulics not needing much attention, and if they (the pushrods) are adjusted just alittle too tight, you'll get no compression. The valves will be open just a little. in that case the motor would turn over real easy. never adjusted the prods on my 250 and she has a serious rod nock too boot. but it never let me down. I think i put like 6 or 8 thousand miles on it before I finally parked it. just waiting for the weather to break and the old girl is comin apart.
