I am putting it behind my 350 and will not be towing alot.

Well I had a 95 GMC truck where the tranny lines hooked into the radiator and somehow coolant found a way into the tranny and ruined it. I suppose there are seperate cooling systems though.

You should always run cooler lines through the heat exchanger on the radiator. Water displaces heat more efficiently than air. Auxiliary coolers are just that...auxiliary, meaning they are used in addition to, and not in place of the heat exchanger. If coolant got into the tranny, you had a leak in your heat exchanger.

Thanks LeddZep (Great name by the way) so if I am installing a 700R4 I better have a dang good or new heat exchanger it sounds like. I was just hoping to run it without a cooling system.

Very good idea to run the stock radiator cooler and add good aux. cooler. Ive had a few 700s and they are way more reliable when kept cool. Tried not to run an aux. cooler on my 71 and the trans would hit 200 degrees pretty easily which is to hot. I added a pretty large cooler (75 bucks) plate type from napa and last summer it ran much cooler. It typically runs between 140 and 160, hit 180 on a 104 degree day. It works so much better know. Its an expensive investment, might as well protect it.

I don't run a 700R, I have a turbo 400. But I recently installed a larger cooler and its made all the difference. Tranny runs much cooler... I could not agree more with the other post - cheap insurance.

One thing I noticed in my swap was if it was shifting quite a bit, (we have hills and I have a heavy foot), the temp would climb pretty quick and it seems 700R4s dont like any heat at all, or atleast mine doesnt anyways. So you could run a tranny temp gauge if you are worried and can always add an auxilary cooler later. And yes a good pressure test on the radiator wouldnt hurt since ANY amount of moisture will kill an automatic.

Thanks everybody, I will add the cooler for sure now. Thought I was doing good for $184 but after driveshaft manipulation, speedo, tv cable mods and hydrolic lock up and cooler its starting to climb. More to come I'M sure. Oh well, always does.

The only tranny I have ever done was a C4 in my 67 Mustang I had in high school. This is gonna be fun.
