Gas hog

I took a little 140 mile round trip in my 72 GMC 4X4 the other day and when I got home my truck was almost empty. I could not believe how much gas I used! As soon as I got home I filled it up again ($60) so I could check the milage. I got up the next morning and my tank was almost empty! Looked under my truck and saw a nice stream of gas flowing out of my fuel pump, the diaphram must have torn. I don't know how I could have missed the smell of at least 15 gallons of gas on the ground, I looked under the truck and could see where the gas had been spraying all over under the truck, I think I am very lucky there wasn't a spark or enough heat to ignite the gas and burn my truck to the ground! Counting nearly two tanks of gas and parts, this was the most expensive fuel pump I ever bought!

Check/change your oil too. If the diaphragm tore, it could leak gas into the crankcase. Oil level would be overfilled and diluted.

I had that happen on my '59 chevy....but with the carb and it filled the motor up. I was lucky it didnt explode or anything! The motor sure is clean now though!

Yep, seen that before.
Except there was no external leakage, and all the fuel was pumped into the engine.

Interesting when you go to drain the oil with a pan big enough for a few quarts, only to get a few gallons of unleaded first then 5 quarts of engine oil.

BTW, the engines bearings were toasted and the engine had to be torn down in my case.

This was a friends old elCamino that he asked me to troubleshoot why it wouldn't start...

I hope that didn't happen in my case! Now you got me worried! I never even thought about that! I am going to change the oil first thing in the morning.

Man, real lucky finding the leak before more than the gas was lost.
Found a gas leak in a '70 Bug I used to have from the massive loss of gas, 'cept it was in a fuel line IN the engine compartment

go out and check the oil now. If it is way over full, then you know you need to change the oil. If it is where it should be, then there is no need.

I just went out and checked it, the oil level seems fine, I couldn't smell any gas in it and it looked clean. I just changed the oil a month ago but I am going to change it tomorrow anyway, it's a lot cheaper than rebuilding the engine! I just hope if there is gas in the oil that I haven't done any damage! I have put exactly 23 miles on it since I replaced the pump. All right every one, tell me it's gonna be ok!

I lost a motor this way too..

Check your oil! And DRAIN it quick then change it a time or 2 and hope for the best..

Although it was a good excuse to build a new motor

Well I drained my oil today, I had changed it less than a month ago so the oil should have been fairly clean, it was clean the last time I drained it, this time the oil was black, I mean black. It was also thinner than it should have been. When I checked it this morning it was a quart high, I assume that extra quart could be gas. I bought five quarts of cheap oil, dumped out the filter and put it back on and ran the engine awhile, drained it, changed the filter and then refilled it with some good oil.
The engine still runs great, smooth, good oil pressure and doesn't heat up at all. I think I escaped without any damage. I will definately remember to check my oil out if I ever have another fuel pump fail!
Thanks to all who suggested I check out the oil for gas! You may have saved an engine!
