Im putting a set of new pipes on my truck and want to know what exactly is the difference between the two and which ones are better for what? I want a exhaust that has a nice rumble to it but isnt annoyingly loud when driving down the road or when i get heavy on the pedal. What do you guys like and run on your trucks?

I have a old set of glass packs. They have a nice low rumble to them.

I agree, I hate hearing that loud "pop pop pop" from trucks.

Low rumble/grumble sounds best, with a bit of cam lope.

it depends? If you want that old school look and sound go exhaust manifolds, dual exhaust with a good set of glass packs out the back.

Or a nice set of throaty mufflers (my preference). Listen to a few set ups and decide.

I have 2 1/2" exhaust with super 40 flowmasters on my 72. I think it sounds great. My buddy has thrush glass packs on his 72 and it also sounds great, not to loud just driving around, but has great tone under acceleration.

X2. Glasspacks are not all that flow efficient either

Glasspacks are mufflers. There are even louder mufflers these days than glasspacks. I like chambered mufflers

40 years ago the only Turbo mufflers were Corvair Turbo mufflers,where the name came from. Remember that? In the early '70s is when they started with the decibel laws and guys started running Corvair Turbos to maintain good flow,tone it down,yet still sound like something.

Well if I wasn't putting my truck up for sale and had to replace my exhaust today, I would put on a pair of Porters. I just really dig the sound of them. Check em out http://www.portermufflers.com/ Hope that helps u man.

I had a 1964 vehicle with stainless steel exhaust,that sound really good.When the time come to put exhaust on my 67 truck.I'am going with stainless steel again.

good luck with those flowtechs, I tought their headers were cheap till I had to move the engine back 2", have a new driveshaft made and hacked up my lower ontrol arm.
new glasspacks suck, way too loud for my taste. Een after they're broken in under aceleration I think they sound horrible.
I hhave some knockoff flowmaster 40s on my truck and like them alot.

I have to agree with DannyK. I never really liked that raspy, popping sound of glasspacks. Regular turbo mufflers are too blah as well. A decent chambered muffler just has an awesome sound to it.

My dad ran a turbo muffler on his big block 67 chevelle for many, many years. My step brother and I tried for a long time to get him to put on flowmasters (before every company out there had chambereds) and he resisted. When he rebuilt the car he caved and put some one. It was like night and day. He loved them ever since.

They better fit, cuz they were NOT cheap. Headers and Y pipe alone were $487 !

Dynomax Bullets! like a glasspack but flow much much better. sounds very good with an x pipe of crossover. nice low rumble no popping if you have crossover. thats what i plan to run on my pickup.

Treveiger, I researched the Crap out of mufflers when it was time for my new dual system. EVERYONE is using FlowCrappers and while that's nice for them I wanted something........Different/Better.
After a few months of listening to everyones sound bites I finally decided and I got my wish: Hooker Aerochamber Mufflers.
Dude, seriously, these things ROOCCKKK

I sound like I have a nasty Cam and it doesn't have that Nasty "Rap" to them either and it doesn't sound loud in the cab at all, but everyone will turn their heads to see "Who's that".
You can get them in black or regular silver and Summit has them for $70 lousy bucks a piece (I got the SS version) and they sound AWESOME.

I've got headers and dual 12" Cherry Bomb glasspacks on my truck. Well, the body of the muffler is only 8" long.

I think they sound great. Especially when those secondaries on the q-jet open. But, that's me and I like everything as loud as I can get it. If it were legal to run around with straight pipes I'd do it. Since I'm only 20 that might add to the equation too...

i got the same setup on my truck and love it. but like you said dark knight i am also young and love loud cars.

I would like to put true dual pipes on my truck not with the H pipe or anything like that just to pipes going out the back. Why arent glass backs flow efficient? I want something with good flow not just good sound.

Hooker Aerochambers are a straight through Design and are THE Highest rated straight through Muffler on the market. Go to the site and read and take my word for it, they're worth every penny and you'll love the sound.

but when i do get one i dont want it to be annoyingly loud.

I have Sanderson shortie headers, 2.25" pipes and Cherry Bomb turbo on my truck, no h pipe, they are perfect, not so loud you cant talk in the cab ( I do not have sound deadener..yet!) but load enough to irritate others on hard accel.

Opinions vary, you need sound clips to pick what "you" like.

Specifics:

350 SBC
full length headers
30" long Cherry Bomb Glass Packs
2-1/2" tail pipes running all the way back to the back of the rear fenders
true old school duals, no x-pipe.

One thing to keep in mind is the diameter and length of the tailpipes makes a huge difference in the sound of the exhaust.
