What are dashes made out of looking to repair
Im looking to repair my 1982 silverado black dash that is orig but it is cracked in front of passenger about the size of my palm and in front of driver on top og gauges on the cliff area tiny cracks.I was looking at lmc dashes and there way over priced for something that looks no different then the cheapy molds i see for 100 dollors or some dashes that i found made out of urethan materials whaever that means.Im not looking for a very cheap dash as i dont want to cheap my truck out even tho im probably going to wrap it in leather. But i want a peace of mind knowing that i get good quality so what are the oem dashes made out of the plastic is very thick.I see alot of mold dashes but there the stamp out plastic type crap but hey there cheap and do the job what do you guys think.I dont think anyone makes as thick plastic dashes ! anywhere! does anyone have a lmc dash

Re: What are dashes made out of looking to repair
Now, this IS cheap, but I just got a dash from the junkyard that was cracked, albeit not nearly as bad as the one I had, but I figured I'd try to fix it with body filler. I just ground out or peeled away the cracked vinyl, sanded it with 80, and wiped regular polyester filler in the cracks. It took some finessing to feather it out okay, but after a coat of primer, a texture coat, and black base, it came out way better than I expected.
I don't know how long it'll last, but it looks great for now! It could be a way to get the base of the dash flat for your leather upholstery.

Re: What are dashes made out of looking to repair
I was watching "Powerblock" TV and they repaired a Buick dash with a plastic filler, like Bondo, but it was flexible.
It was this episode: http://www.powerblocktv.com/video/?e...-22&ep_show=MC |

Look up COVERLAY on the internet! They are not "cheap" and I have used them for years, they have a lifetime warranty I think.

Re: What are dashes made out of looking to repair
Dash pads are generally made of closed cell foam and then dipped in a vinyl coating. You can use bondo to smoothe them and then cover them in vinyl. Also there are vinyl repair kits that have like an elmers glue type liqiud that hardens like rubber when heated and has a vinyl pattern pad that is used to make it look like the surrounding vinyl. And there are vinyl paints that work pretty good such as Marhyde.

And the glaze coat that is made for the vinyl repair is slightly flexible so it won't crack like bondo. It's at the beginning of this video. Check it out. Quote:
