I found a tailgate for 73 up and was wondering if its valuable or not. Whats the going rate on a GMC tailgate thats straight small holes at top from a guard and very little surface rust?

I paid $20 for a rust free, straight gate with trim and latches at a local swap meet in oct. of last year.

Where is the GMC embossed?

I think GMC was on the left side. I didn't get any pics. I just saw it and wondered. I see quite a few at junkyards that aren't that bad and was just wondering if they were as scarce as the 67-72 version. If so I'll start scarfing them up.

If it was on the left side then it was a tailgate from an '81-87 year GMC (Chevrolet tailgates were embossed on the opposite side), and are more common than earlier ones. Late 70's tailgates had GMC and Chevrolet embossed in the center. Prior to that I'm not sure of their location. I've seen 73-74 GMC's with the tailgate embossed up on the right hand corner, but I don't know when they changed.

I can get 73-87 tailgates all day long for $40- $50 at the local pick n pull yard, but the 67-72 tailgates are hard to come by.

Upper LEFT hand corner

I think they were 73-75.

Yeah that was a stab in the dark, I can only think of two of those tailgates that I've seen in person. Fifty bucks won't buy a good rust free tailgate here, even for an 80's model.

The GMC was in the middle indent of the gate. I should have made that more clear. So if they arent that scarce I guess I'll just leave them alone. Thanks for the info guys.

finding a good one around here in the yard i go to is sometimes hard because somehow there all rusted or beat to heck

thelonerife how bad do they salt roads in northern TN? To me, any tailgate that is in good shape from '87 back is worth keeping an eye out for. I'm just north of Lexington and most tailgates around here are either rusted out at the bottom or beat up.

They do salt the roads here but not too bad, although this year we've had a good bit of snow. I doubt the one I saw was on the road lol. I might just get it and see if anyone wants it.
