Flex plate and tranny swap question
Board dudes,
I'm swapping out a Saginaw 3-speed manual for a 700R4 automatic behind a small block 307 in my '69 C20. I'm thinking I need the flex plate (or its aftermarket equivalent) that would have been used were my truck originally an automatic tran. Other than matching the starter to flex plate's ring, mating the 700R4 to my 307 is a pretty straight-foward deal, right? Any observations or expertise would be appreciated. Thanks! DTT

Re: Flex plate and tranny swap question
Wrong! The trans will fit the engine & a 85 or earlier flexplate will work as long as it fits the converter. Get the 168 tooth version. You will need to remove the cross member under the bell houseing & put one at the rear of the trans.

Re: Flex plate and tranny swap question
and you need to look into a converter lock up controller, and you'll want to read up on the TV cable importance (www.bowtieoverdrives.com is an awesome place to read up) If you don't get it right, the trans will be junk in short order.
You'll need a trans cooler and lines, a shifter, tranny mount (metric bolts) yoke, driveline mods and the above mentioned crossmember. |
