Where did the name Hugger Orange come from...

I spotted a nice truck here in town and told her the name of the color, now she won't let me sleep until she knows how the name came to be......hmmm...on the other hand....not sleeping might be fun of it's own accord

Someone here must know this...

As far as I know it was just a catchy term thing.There were other colors of the era that had the same type of names some are

Sublime- a really loud green
Midnight Blue
Jet Black
Candy apple red
Competition orange
Perormance red
Plum Crazy
Tornado red

Now you can keep this a secret until you're tired

Here is what I have heard and also found it on the web.

"The Hugger" was the marketing nickname for the Camaro, appearing in magazine ads and commercials. It was in reference to the cars handling characteristics (it hugs corners... so it's the hugger!) GM advertising used the hugger promotion to offer special colors: hugger orange paint and an orange houndstooth interior.

yes, Ive been told that The new wider, and lower bodystyle of the 69 Camaro was called "hugger". Somewhere along the line, Hugger Orange came to be...Or so the story goes

Camaro was given a make-over for 1969 with new sheet metal that gave the car a decidedly lower, wider stance -- hence the name "Hugger." Production started on September 26, 1968 and ended on February 26, 1970 -- effectively making (to some) the next Camaro a 1970-1/2. The options list grew as well as the color palette. A "halo" vinyl roof was an option that gave the Camaro a distinctive look all its own. For a second time, the Camaro paced the Indianapolis 500 -- a Dover White convertible with orange hounds tooth upholstery and the now-famous “Hugger Orange” stripes made this pace car memorable for years to come. Approximately 3,675 replicas were produced.

Well check that out. I know a 12 bolt posi when I see one. And that is not a RS model either... 'cause those headlights are definately not hidden.

Of course I am speaking about the blue '67 with the saggy rear end, and not the late model with the, well, non-saggy rear end.

The younger, newer model still has good springs under her.

Actually,I don't recall Chevy conceiving the name "Hugger",but borrowed it from the public like so many names used in promotion. Like the name "Chevy" itself. We the public came up with that one. Hugger was being used before the Camaro. It's shortened from "Road Hugger" which described a good handling car. There were tires out called Road Huggers,too. Hip words were the theme of the time and were coming out all over. Look at all the names used on cars in the late '60s. Pretty far out,man.

Gosh all this time I thought it was the orange hip hugger jeans that girls
wore with a wide white belt. They looked like a hugger orange camaro
with white racing strips on the dance floor. LOL. Don't want to date myself
