What did I do...Any suggestions??
Hi All,
I would greatly appreciate any help/trouble shooting ideas. I have a 1973 chevy, all stock under the hood. When I purchased the truck, the previous owner had an aftermarket ammeter wire up to the dash. I purchased a new cluster that included an ammeter so I was removing the aftermarket one. It is tied into the truck through the firewall, into the wiring harness that goes from the battery across the back of the truck to the firewall plug where the fuse block sits on the other side (see my crappy pic). In the course of removing, I accidently grounded the wires, and burned out the ammeter (it started smoking). Now, when I turn the key, there is no power what so ever. No dash lights, nothing. I checked the fuses, and did not see a blown fuse. I am going to recheck tonight because it was getting dark. I just replaced the alternator last week. I also tried jumping the vehicle since I though I may have worn the batter down, no avail. Is there solonoid that I may have burned out? If no fuses are blown, then I must have melted a wire or something. I'd appreciate any input or any suggested trouble shooting techniques. Thank you very much. |

You may have popped the fusible links going from the junction black to the starter. That's where I would start checking, after you have disconnected the battery.

Thank you for the suggestion. Where would the fusible links be located? By the starter under the engine or up top?

They will go from the junction box on the firewall to the starter. If the fusible links have popped, they will be very soft. On the starter side, it will go from the main lug (where the positive battery cable attaches) to the junction box.

Great! Thanks. Are they just an inline fuse that I would replace?
