my 350 is out of a 74 impala, and has the stock distributor on it. when i bought the pickup 2 years ago i had to replace the cap and rotor and ignition control module. i got a nice red cap from oriley off the shelf...i dont have a picture right now to show you but is it still a points distributor? thanks guys! i know someone will know!!

"cap and rotor and ignition control module" would indicate HEI. Stock distributor for 1974 would be points type, 1975 was the first year for HEI. Send us a picture.

is the coil in the cap or is there a separate coil and wire...... wait you said that you replaced the ignition control module so that means its a hei.

Is it HEI? I can get pictures on Sunday night that's when I have to move my truck again. I remember switching the coil to the new cap, but when I replaced the rotor I did the ignition control module as well because it was running like crap. The reason I ask is because when I put my 84 454 in I will have to take out the resistor on the white ignition wire if my 350 is points. Because the newer 454 is 84. Also have to remove the ignition wire to the starter as well? Because I don't have to run my 454 on 6V it's 12V if it's a 84 right?

If you have a coil on the cap and an ignition module, it's an HEI. However, that doesn't guarantee you don't have a resistor on the wire. Unless whoever put the motor in rewired it, you could still have a resistor wire. I've seen HEI run with a resistor, but they don't run well.

When we put the 454 into my '71 we ran a new 10 ga wire with an inline fuse and hooked it to the unfused connection on the fuse block just to make sure we had good clean 12 volts to the distributer (Hei).
