56 stock master cylinder set up
Greetings, does anyone here have a pic of a 56 stock master cylinder set up? Mine has some butchered up 'upgrade' that isn't working very well and will probably need to come off in favor of original equipment. I'm not sure how the original was, but it doesn't look like the pictures in the catalogs of stock cylinders will bolt up to what is on mine. Just curious as to what it should look like. Thanks!

Re: 56 stock master cylinder set up
Here's a pic. The brake pedal pivots on the pin, and there should be a bracket on the frame with two holes that correspond to the two holes in the master cylinder. It's positioned so the the cap is accessible through the round hole in the floorboard just in front of the seat.

Re: 56 stock master cylinder set up
Wow, just a little over an hour!! I've had this question posted on other forums for over a week with no responses. A friend just told me where there was one near my house and I just got back from looking at it. I do still have the original bracket that it mounts to, so I can go back to stock. I take it from this picture that there is no push rod, that the plunger on the cylinder goes directly onto the pedal? And there is no return spring anywhere? My pedal seems to sink (making the brake lights come on!) so this will probably help that too. Looks like another Franklin into the project! Thanks again.

Sorry, don't have a scanner, this is a photo out of the assembly manual for the master cylinder.

Good ole stock loving me, does not like the stock master cylinder, its unsafe. A dual master cylinder is better.

Re: 56 stock master cylinder set up
*UPDATE* - Got the new (stock) master cylinder installed last weekend, and all the other 'upgrades' removed - now I have working brakes!! Someone had put a Japanese booster and MC/proportioning valve(?) in it complete with metric lines on a bracket that put it back about a foot. After I took everything off, the original bracket was there, albeit with boogered up holes. Also made use of the original clevis and attaching bracket on the homemade setup. It also had an allen wrench welded in between to make the linkage long enough. It was a real . . . well, never mind!
In my opinion, a single line MC that works is better than a dual - whatever that thing was - that doesn't. Only thing I need now is the return spring, anyone know what size I need for it? Are they measured by length, coil diameter and gague? Thanks again to everyone for their help. |
