Re: Show us some steering wheels

Ran across this wheel from a company down under.

The one picture of it installed is in a 64-65 chevelle. How cool is that.

Opinions on steering wheel for '65 Chevy???
I used a Grant #992 steering wheel, a walnut wheel with actual finger grips on the back. It is 15" in diameter x 2-3/4" dish and comes with a built in horn button. Not the cheapo-cheesy mushroom type that just snaps into place.

This is a strong heavy duty steering wheel, worthy of a truck that has "arm strong" steering. Many of the walnut type wheels are delicate and spindly, not the case with this one. Big diameter rim you can get a good grip on, and the quality of the wood is good too.

Another big benefit: This wheel has about 3 inches less dish than the previous one. I can now move the seat forward and recline the seat a bit.

Much better than stock, IMO. Price is great too @ less than $120 bucks: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/GRT-992/

She won't touch wood handle knives, wood spoons and especially wood handled garden tools (come to think of it she doesn't seem to fond of the any type of garden tool). Then again it would be a great way to deter her from driving it so I haven't decided my direction on that yet.

I really like the look of the old wheels like the originals and impala wheels. I'd like to find a smaller version them though. There are some classic wheels that have been made smaller, from 18" to 15", but they seem to be limited to three chevy styles. The price tag is up there too, $300.

Re: Show us some steering wheels

You could use an original old wheel cut off the rim and tig weld on a new one, then leather wrap the new rim. Or you could use the wood wheel and get a leather cover to go over the wood.

Just throwin some ideas out there.

Re: Show us some steering wheels

Thanks!
Yes,the power windows worked great. If I remember right, I used F---O----R---D motors on the orig chevy regulators. The gear teeth meshed perfect. Just welded the motors on...well maybe a little more than that.
I used Mustang arm rests along with Grand Am seats. The door locks were not operable. Pretty proud of that ole' truck... missed it so much had to build another one

No internet research back then. Sure helps these days with great forums like this one!!!!

Can't wait to get my new bigger and badder build done!

Re: Show us some steering wheels

OK, so I looked through this thread, some of the others and even watched the overhaulin' video, but didn't find what I was looking for.

A shop in town said they would leather wrap my stock wheel for $100. While I am very tempted, I don't know if the stock wheel with leather would look funny or not since the ring is so thin.

So anyone wrap the stock wheel or similar and have pics?

Re: Show us some steering wheels

Here's one I'm consideing. It's a 90-94 Chevy Lumina wheel (I think). They come in a few colors. A little modern but I like the size and shape.

Re: Show us some steering wheels

guess I'm just gettin old.. But I don't think anything looks as cool as a factory wheel. And I don't mean that a 66 C10 has to have a factory 66 C10 wheel either. Mine currently does have the factory wheel - but I do plan to swap in my 62 bel air wheel as soon as I can get around to it. The point is that it is "a" factory wheel from something. While I like the beefier leather wheel in my '01 chev truck, i think the best "looking" steerig wheels are some form of stock wheel. But to each his own - and having said that, the majority of my cars have hads the old JC Whitney version of the hot rod steering wheel in them, so bare bones and low $. Style was similar to Markeb01's above, but his looks much nicer than any I ever had! I've often mentioned that wheels make the truck, but that aint just the 4 on the ground, I think the right steering wheel can MAKE an interior, and the wrong one can ruin it just as easily. Like I said (or meant to say I guess) there's no wrong answer - it's whatever you like it to be - but for those starting early Christmas shopping for me, I like strock steering wheels....

I just put this Lumina wheel on mine. It's more comfortable for me but it blocks the speedo a little bit. It will work for awhile.
