Theres this really annoying pinging noise, it happened even before i put my new cam in, i can cruise and wont hear it but i have a 383 so like to "get on it" and when i do soon as it shifts into 2nd gear i get this pinging/rattling noise and i know it is NOT and rod knock im being told its a spark knock anyway its annoying as all hell and im not sure how to get rid of it i mean **** im runnin 93 octane too. Any help would be appreciated

Use a cooler heat range plug. Go down one range. If it seems to help but not all the way, drop another one (don't go more than 2 heat ranges cooler on the plugs). Use 93 octane gas. Make sure you're not running too lean. And if all that fails, try retarding your timing a bit. If it still pings after all that, get used to the ping. Your compression ratio is probably too high for pump gas.

Never thought about the plugs, i will try that and the carb prolly is running a lil too lean thanks

Need more info.. What is the compression ratio? WHat are the engine specs? Where is your timing set? What kind of carb and what size is it?

What heads, pistons and head gaskets are you using? How far in the bore are the pistons? Your problem may not be compression, but instead lack of quench. Many people mistake pinging to be related to having too much compression when most times it's too much heat soaked into the combustion chamber. A higher octane fuel could help resist the extra heat, but that doesn't mean your compression is causing the problem.

Double check vacuum advance on your dizzy, too. If you're running the same carb with the same settings you had with a 350, you're probably running lean when you get on it.
Get it fixed, detonation tears up more engines than all other causes!
