Unhappy hear a squeek when reversing

here's my problem,

when my truck is engaged in reverse and goin backward i hear a squeek. its horrible, and it isnt constant, i sounds like its rotating cause it goes faster then slower. is it my U-joint or what???? it also does it when i downshift from drive to 2nd (auto tranny). whats the deal? any help would be appreciated cause im a dumb 19 year old.

1972 chevy p/u longbed-grandpa's first new truck

You can't be that dumb. You're smart enough to know you have a problem, and smart enough to ask for help.

My first check would be the u-joints. Crawl underneath and stick a long screwdriver or rod through the joint and see if there is any slack in the joint. Works best if you're parked on a level surface so there isn't any load on the driveshaft.

More important than looking for play in the ujoints, take a good flashight and look for rust coming from out of the caps.

BTW, put the trans in neutral and set the parking brake & block a wheel before checking for looseness.

You did hear the part about the block, right?

I'd bet on center support bearing if its a 2 piece shaft. If not U-Joints

As a start I'd take a grease gun under there whilst checking the parts mentioned above and grease any grease nipples you can find (well this is what we call them in the UK!) you find, may at least stop the noise and slow down any further deterioration.
