Engine Paint
I was wondering what everybody is painting there engines with. Last time i used spray bomb engine paint it started peeling after 6 months. Any suggestions i saw the por 15 but was just going to ask everybody here what they use.

I agree with Newtz duplicolor engine paint has always given me great results and last for a long time I personally done 3 or 4 engines including heads and intake and they still look great without peeling or chipping

I know a good paint job begins with good surface prep.
How are you guys prepping the motors before using the Duplicolor? I am building a vortec motor and have been pondering this myself. |

I have used spray paint a lot and have never had it peel. If yours is peeling you need to do a better job with the prep. I would wash and degrease with a high pressure washer and use a scrapper on the areas that are peeling and use a little primer in the bare metal areas. I use Plasti Kote, I like the Chevy orange

With duplicolors prep spray. Good stuff, and use their engine paint primer first. USE THE instructions on the can. Trust me it matters.

The only engines I've ever painted were hot tanked prior to painting, except for my brothers. His, we just used degreaser, then soap and hot water if I remember correctly. Engine still looks great after a year.

I use the purple soap on it and pressure washed it avoiding those 'need to avoid' areas, then sprayed Imron on it

Carb, alternator, if you have a/c- cover the pump, dont spray directly at hoses and wires and plug wires. i didnt pay too much attention towards the back end of the block/intake on cleaning, mostly the noticable parts of the block that were shown that people would notice better. It cleaned up pretty well just by doing that. I also did not go for show quality just decent looks and i achieved more then that. Plus, if you still got the original aircleaner, sanding that a bit and sprayin black makes a world of difference. Good luck and hope i helped!

I use POR15 engine paint. Over the years I've tried most all the aerosol engine paints and found them to not hold up to chemical exposure. POR is the only one I have found that will stand up to gasoline, oil, brake fluid, carb cleaner and the like without damage. I brush it on according to the instructions.
A 454 I painted with POR15 Chevy orange for my 70 stepside...    A 327 for my 63 short bed, also POR Chevy orange...

hot tanked block sprayed epoxy primer and then vht rattle can engine enamel and still looks this good after 4 years
