1987 Trazer

Hey guys, my son and I are building him an 87 trazer. We are having trouble with the charging system. We are using an older 350 with an internally regulated alternator. We are also using the stock wireing harness from the 87. This had the fuel injection, we just aren't using it. When we remove the alternaton and had it tested, it checked o.k. but when it is on the truck it won't charge. What am I missing?? Thanks... I'll get some pics on here asap. Thx...

Re: 1987 Trazer

Is there no voltage output at all? If so, what is your input voltage?

Re: 1987 Trazer

Input voltage from the batterty? I dont know. 14 volts from a fully charged battery? I can charge it with a battery charger and it will hold a charge, but after running the truck for a while, the battery gets weak. I will get pictures on here today of the wireing. Thx for the response. Kevin

Re: 1987 Trazer

What I am suggesting is its possible you don't have a good input voltage. If the Alt checks good on the bench it should have output in the truck.

Re: 1987 Trazer

The pic below looks to be fusable links. You could have one blown that is causing your issue. Do you have a volt meter or test light? Check the input voltage at the back of the alt and see wht you have. If its not 12-14v then work your way back to the battery.

Re: 1987 Trazer

It looks like the brown wire isn't hooked up with all that tape wrapped on it, The brown wire on the alternator must have switched power to give it a reference point to start charging.

Re: 1987 Trazer

Poking around last night with the test light, and discovered there is no voltage at the back of the alternator. The post that the orange wire is attached to shows no voltage. The brown wire (to the right of the orange)will light the test light when the truck is running. Thanks for the help.

Re: 1987 Trazer

N2TRUX...Thanks for the replies...Isn't there supposed to be a large red wire going from the back of the alt to the bat, or starter?

BTW... Thats a good looking Cheyenne you got there.

Yes, I missed that in your pics..... There should be a wire the same size as the red one on the alternator post now 10 gage, It should run down to the battery post on the starter. But don't run a wire without adding a 5-6" piece of 14 gage fusible link wire at the starter.

Your local parts house should have a fusible link pigtail with a eyelet on one end to fit the starter post and a butt connector on the other to splice your alternator wire to.

Re: 1987 Trazer

Nice... Thanks for the help guys. I think i'm going to run the wire to the firewall, and use the fuseable link already at the starter. Do you guys think that will work??

Re: 1987 Trazer

Give it a try, Most can happen is you over power the fusible link and blow it....
