Re: Devistating storms
i live in lafayette but i am from ringgold. it was destroyed/ the tornado hit ringgold and crossed the mountain into cherokee valley and hit the homes in that valley. including my grandsons home which was destroyed. but thank God my babies came thru unharmed. i was able to get a text message to my son in law, he said they were trapped in the valley. i could not get thru ringgold to go to the valley. i had to go into tennessess and into the valley. had to park my truck and hike appprox 2 miles to get to them. not knowing what to think, i arrived and found them safe. my oldest grandson (4) said pappaw i prayed, i told him thats great because prayer is good. he then said pappaw did you come to rescue me, i said yes sir. he said pappaw i love you. I beleive his child like faith is what brought them thru. THANK GOD

I read today that this was the deadliest tornado outbreak since 1925, when 700+ people were killed in a day. And just think, back then there were no sirens, no radar, nobody on tv telling you to get to your "place of safety." They said the tornado that came through Tuscaloosa and Birmingham may have been on the ground for over 200 miles. I can hardly get my brain around that. I'm headed to Cleveland, TN tomorrow with a church group (they said it's really bad there, but with all the devastation, they haven't gotten much media attention), and I'm hoping to go to Tuscaloosa next weekend with my brother-in-law. He and his family lived there until about a month ago. He showed me this video, and he and his wife were pointing out all the landmarks -- they knew what everything was, or at least what it used to be. This is just stunning; they were kind of in shock watching it.

Re: Devistating storms
Coming back from Cleveland now. First house we went to, the older man who lived there said he wanted help getting his old pickup out from under his carport/shed, which had been crushed by a huge tree. We (15 guys) sawed for over an hour to expose it. Turned out to be a 66 chevy that had belonged to his dad - originally a straight6/3OT, now with a fresh 327/th350. Rear of the roof took a pretty good whack, and the bed was totally destroyed. He also had a 70 chevelle and a 57 2dr post that were unhurt. Can't say the same for the corvette; glad he wasn't sitting in it when the storm hit. (Edit: Just realized it's hard to see in the pic, but there's a limb that went through the roof and then through the driver's seat.) Of course, he was lucky; there were multiple fatalities within a couple miles.

Re: Devistating storms
I live up in Southeast Missouri and we did not realize how hard the south was hit until our local TV station quit posting about the tornadoes and flooding in this area.
We have had the worse flooding since 1973 and many are homeless. But the loss up here is not that great compared to all the life and property loss down south. It is kind of hard to wrap my mind about it. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those that perished and those that survived with such loss of family and property. God Bless.

I heard that the shelters are not overcrowded because of the great people inviting their neighbors into their homes. GOD BLESS THEM!

Re: Devistating storms
Here in Cleveland Tennessee the destruction is indescribable. I have spent the last three days sawing, hauling and moving trees. They may never
figure out how many tornadoes actually hit our town. 10? 15? who knows. The storms started before noon and went on after midnight. just kept coming and coming. The devastation goes on for miles. . But I want to take my hat off to the volunteers who flooded into my town. I have never seen such selfless devotion and commitment from complete strangers. I watched men and women alike work themselves to exhaustion, only to get back up and say "What's next ? Let's get back to it." Simply amazing. . Luckily, my home escaped damage. Family and friends are allright.

Re: Tornado
We were blessed in Scottsboro with just no power for four days. Towns within a 30 mile radious of us were damaged pretty bad. Do a search on youtube for Bridgeport, Rainsville, Albertville Al tornados.

Re: Devistating storms
Retodd, I only saw a small part of Cleveland, but it was flat-out unbelievable. God bless you guys up there; you've got a lot of work ahead. The guy who got our crew together, his mom lives on Durkee Rd, up the hill from hwy 74. He kept looking over at the next hill, on the other side of the highway. He said he couldn't believe he could see all the houses on that hill from his family's property, because there had always been too many pine trees blocking the view. Not anymore.
72bluz, is that your daughter's house in ringgold?

Re: Devistating storms
The last 7 days have been the most exhausting of my life.
Physically and emotionally. I have dug through collapsed houses. I have fed the hungry. I have held shattered families. And I have cut trees, cut trees and cut trees. My hands are bloody, my back is on fire, and my heart is just raw. But through it all I have learned a few things. People are strong. There are reserves within all of us that take extreme situations to bring to surface. There are good folks in your community. people who are willing to help a stranger. People who would give you the shirt off their back, and the sweat of their brow. Your friends are real important. Check on them often. Lend a hand when they need it. Because you may someday be in need. The Red Cross is truly a good outfit. The orginazation they brought to a chaotic situation was truly amazing. They have been through this before, and they know what they are doing. And lastly, have a plan. I was a hundred miles from home when the tornadoes began. Cell phones didn't work. Roads were completely blocked. But I knew just where to go to meet up with my "Tennessee Family." Safe and sound- Todd
