Power steering gear - which one? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi all,

Looking to buy a new (rebuilt) power steering gear for the 72 Suburban - Autozone has 'em about $100 cheaper than any of the catalogs (LMC, Eckler's, etc). Theirs are rebuild by Duralast. Anyone use one of these Duralast ones...any complaints?

I personally buy RedHead. Duralast has a pretty poor
reputation (at least in my area) for pretty much
everything they rebuild.

My personal opinion.

Run from them ... I gave up after the third box, back to manuel. Its cheaper then the gym. Autozone lifetime waranty ,you'll spend a lifetime changing it out.

68-75 remaned from Oreilly's. On since 2007 & still feels the same. Much tighter than the used box on my burb.

one thing I have leanred - Duralst is the wors, cheaopest and least reliable. O;Rielliey's is mid-decent to good and Napa is the best. The prices line up with these quality levels.

Thanks all. I'm probably going to go for the Red Head - I haven't got an exact quote yet - but seeing around online it will probably be around $300 - which is fine for such an important part of the truck. also, like the idea of using a smaller company - give them the business - and everyone online says they are nice guys there.

I'll post an update when all is installed in the coming weeks (just waiting for the State tax rebate check - the federal one is already spent!).

We have the Red Head gears in stock. They build our quick ratio gears. Lots of board members have them here.

Why not just get a used one? If you can go see the truck in the junkyard and the box is not wet with fluid, or adjusted too far, or in a horrible front end collision, just go used.

I got a used one for the core. Then got a nice new one for 125$

I agree 100% with this:
you'll spend a lifetime changing it out.
I think is much better buying brands with good reputation
