Trans O.D-I.D.?

Went to the scrapyard today and was walking out when i saw a ford ranger with a mid 70s chevy gate laying in the bed. Gate looked good so i grabbed it. Under the gate was this trans. I think it is a 67 overdrive setup, but just wondering if anyone can confirm? The tailshaft has a slight bend in it... Bummer... i still grabbed it.
Numbers on the case are 3858986 C 15 7
Thanks.

That is a Saginaw all syncro 3spd OD. I think they started using them in 68, (but could be off by a year)

Re: Trans O.D-I.D.?

Thanks for the info mark. The date code looks like march of 67. Is this what would be used in the 67-69 pickups?

Eric,
Your welcome, Yes I do believe it was used all the way up through and possibly past 72, it was also used in GM cars of the same vintage

Re: Trans O.D-I.D.?

I wasn't aware of these after 69. I know they didn't come behind any "bigger" or performance engines. So the car and truck ones are the same trans?

Re: Trans O.D-I.D.?

After a bit of research it appears they only used it from 66-69 in the trucks, and my Hollander interchange manual lists a different number for the passenger car version, I guess the one in my 68 Chevelle was incorrect, (it looked identical to the truck version) Hmmmmmm

Re: Trans O.D-I.D.?

So explain to me how this works exactly, and is it on the SPID? Is there a 4th gear or the 3rd is just super high?

I have a 67 shortbed that has it listed on the spid. I am not sure of the exact setup, but there is an overdrive lever under the dash to pull out and that would engage the overdrive. On a 67 ford i used to drive if the overdrive knob was out you just let off the gas at 32 mph or faster and it would shift into OD like an auto. I assume this would be similar.

Re: Trans O.D-I.D.?

Old thread and I don't know if this helps but...a friend just pulled his Dad's old truck from beside their barn. I think it was a 70, not sure. It was a CST and he thinks it had a 307 (v8 for sure). It had the overdrive on the SPID as well as the Tachometer. Under the dash was a fairly large black handle labeled overdrive. Was a three on the tree. My friend recalled when you got it up to speed in third, you put in the clutch and pulled out the handle, then released the clutch.

Are these transmissions tough to get refurbished?
