airbags question

I'm working on my trucks rear airbags. I've been planning on moving them. And having them sit on the 4link. Question is does it matter were the sit on the link. Closer or further from the axel.

Re: airbags question

I have done this twice. On my 65, they were half way up the trailing arms. On my 61 they are just a few inches forward of the original coil spring loction. I thought both worked well for me.

Re: airbags question

Mine would be a few inches further up. Just wondering how it rides. And it came down about 3 inches lower

Re: airbags question

The bags have about 45psi in each and it rides like a caddy.

I don't know the brand and they are not marked. They are 7" and 2500-2600# range.

Re: airbags question

I would think the closer you have the springs to the rear axle would put less stress on the bushings and the trailing arms. If you are going to carry any loads I would keep them close to the axle.

Re: airbags question

I would agree!! I never hauled anything in my 65 so it didnt matter. There is more of a chance to haul some gear in my 61.

The ride is good!!

Re: airbags question

If I remeber correctly, further away from the axle gives you more travel and faster lifting, closer to the axle gives you more weight carrying capacity.

True.

The further away give you more leverage to squeeze the bag for a nice ride. I was worried about a stiff ride with them close, but that wasnt an issue either.

Re: airbags question

If I were you I'd use bigger bars if you're going to mount your bags to them, to prevent them from bending. I believe ***************** makes gussets you can weld to the bottom of your bars to give them some extra support.

In regards to the location of the air spring consider the trailing arm / 4-link bar as a lever arm.

The rear curb weight for a '65 1/2 ton pickup is about 1800 lbs. That means you will need 900 lbs of force to lift one rear wheel off the ground if the air spring is located at the rear axle.

Now lets say your trailing arm length is about 48 inches and you want to put the air spring in the center at 24 inches.

48 inches x 900 Lbs = 43,200 in-lbs

43,200 in-lbs / 24 inches = 1800 lbs

So each air spring will need to lift 1800 lbs to lift the truck. And the related suspension components will also need to handle that much force, just to lift the rear of the truck up off the bump stops. That's without any payload.

It becomes pretty obvious, pretty quick, why the air spring needs to be as close to the axle as possible in order to reduce the size of the components required to handle the loads.

I wouldn't put the air spring on the 4-link simply because it wasn't designed for that. Compare your 4 link bar to a stock trailing arm. The 4 link bar needs more section height for the application you are considering. Even if you gusset the bar as ChiefRocka discussed above are the rod ends adequate to handle the side loading that results due to the air spring?

Re: airbags question

Well I'm glad I ask the question before continuing this project. Over the middle axel didn't really give me a lower stands and much of a side to side. I'm going to grind it of and place off of the cnotch. Back to.the original plan.
