Steering Wheel of Fortune

Hey Folks,

Just wish to share a wheel upgrade I did on my truck. My original steering wheel was disintegrating quickly. Honestly I was not a fan of the factory wheel styling and with reproduction wheels about $220 or more, I searched for something that had some of the elements of the original.

I also had a 1959 Impala steering wheel I had plan to use, but it was the same diameter as the original.

Wishing for something more modern; in a smaller diameter, stylish, and more durable; I found this wheel on ebay for $19.99 free shipping. I had to make some adjustments under the horn to make the wiring work, but it wasn't too bad. I did not take pics of this process, darn darn darn....

I like that the newer steering wheel "arms" or "support" has an element of the original wing-styling. Also the center horn cap fits nicely and does not obscure the "automatic shifter indicator." Wow, say that 3-times fast!

This wheel was painted with exterior house (acrylic?) paint from Lowe's using a small brush and about three light coats. The chrome will be replaced with some 3M Chrome molding tape when I get a chance. The sky's the limit on how you wanna do it colorwise. This is night & day from what I had and the wheel does not feel tacky or sticky. The smaller diameter offers a little more leg room too.

I'm sure there is a Chevy/Astro version and I may go back and paint the GMC horncap letters red, but I'm done for today and Momma's calling...

OK Vanna, do your thing and cue the pictures...

With this wheel there is still good visibility of all the gauges.

I really like the first replacement too. Maybe even more than the second. Nice job.
