okay so the starter on my sb 350 made a hell of a noise, i took it off and grabbed the one of my spare motor i put it on and a shim that came off the old one went to start it same horrible grinding noise WHAT DID I DO WRONG obvioulsy not a direct bolt on part never had to change a starter befor HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

When you say horrible noise, be more specific. Is making a loud grinding like the teeth are not lining up or is it trying to turn over and grinding at that point?

Busted flex plate? That would be horrible. Been there, done that.

see if you can roll the truck up a few feet and try it that should help rule out the flex plate.. bering broken.. did younotice if the teeth were ok on the flex plate?

The teeth are grinding, I'm going to take out the shim and roll it forward a bit I layed under when buddy tried starting it and its not lining up

Is the Flex plate worn, are the teeth in bad shape. Is the starter bindex not pulling out far enought. Have you tried painting the flex plate with spray paint to see where its clashing.

You can see on the flex plate were it is hitting it all the teeth are fine and the gear In the starter comes out far enough it just makes one heck of a grinding noise do I have to line it up some how should I take the shim out and see what happens what's the worst I could wreak I have a complete parts truck not to worried

All of the mechanics I have talked to about starters have told me that they have never used shims when installing starters, which makes me wonder why the shims are included with a new starter. Sounds to me like a bad starter, not extending far enough to completely engage. I have never had much luck with rebuilt starters, so I finally bought a GM high torque mini starter which has worked very well. The only thing I don't like about it is that if the truck does not start on the first attempt you have to wait a few seconds until the starter winds down before starting it again.

Shimming a starter properly makes a difference. There should be a gap between the flexplate and the bendix for proper engagement.

mine was grinding and it was the flex plate and starter
both were worn quite a bit
try using the starter outa the truck with booster cables
make sure it comes out and turns freely
do it quite a few times
