diff flip set back???

Hi I noticed that on diff flip kits they set the axle back an inch, is that to center the wheel in the opening or to keep the drive shaft length correct? reason I ask is I am just using a set of perches of another diff and have to build a new drive shaft cause of my engine/trans swap, but want the wheel centered, I have no box on the truck so am not sure where the diff is supposed to sit?????
I did a quick search but did not find a direct answer.

its to keep the driveshaft lenghth correct

It looks hideous. My flip kit did the same...I had to get a new driveshaft for a new tranny I'm putting in, so I took the time to take my flip kit plates out, and redrill them so the axle is centered...looks much better.

It just put the wheel back in the center of the opening on my Jimmy flip (plus kept the driveshaft).

Ok, now I am scratchin' my head. Educate me on a flip kit.

Do you actually flip the differential upside down? And if so what do you do about the vent?
