72 shortbed...
currently building this fleetside for a customer. Eddy (son) and Jess (pops) approached me to install air-bags on there project. they had been having bad luck with all the other shops around town working on their project and decided to hand the complete project to me. so we are going to have some fun with this build.
currently the suspension is set in, but not plumbed. we used suicide doors and cpp. we did not want to modify a-arms or notch the frame so we sat is as low as we could without going to far. the body needs the most attention, although front fenders and rad support are new, the cab is full of old body work that unfortunately will not be completely removed. the bed on the other hand is nice, minor metal work to the sides and a new tailgate and bed front panel will get that taken care off. wheel choice is a tough one, while i never prefer 20's on any of my vehicles the father son team had their eyes on a certain look. so my first choice was American Racing Salt Flats but the budget will not allow. so a friend of Jess's offered him a set of Boss Wheels 336 in gray finish center (look like Shelby Cobras) in 20" size. so it looks like that is the route we will be taking. the backspacing (offset) is what we are having trouble with. the rear are 20x10 offered in only +38 and the fronts are 20x8.5 offered in +18 or +28; however! they are 5x4.5 bolt pattern so a wheel adapter is required of approx 1". http://www.bossmotorsports.com/custo...els.cfm?id=327 can anybody with more experience with the above shed some light on the subject for me? Re: 72 shortbed...
well we got some yellow primer on some parts and "test fit" the wheels.
the back needed to come down a bit so i pipe notched the frame. shaved the front cowl. finished priming the truck and mounted tires for a full test fit. lots of the aftermarket parts dont quite line up. they will require some fitting. |

Re: 72 shortbed...
the truck has progressed some more, the wheels have now been painted in gold (centers) and the early side trim has been installed. right now the truck is being blocked out / final sanding before paint.
what inner (bed) wheel tubs are guys using with 20x10 wheels and air bags? will they still fit under the stock ones? we dont have any to work with. |

Re: 72 shortbed...
I believe you can barely fit 20X10's with bags within the stock wheel tubs... depending on backspacing

Re: 72 shortbed...
well we are going to just move forward and if i have to fab or modify the stock tubes i will.
we got some paint going on this thing. unfortunately it has been though too many body shops and what we have to work with isnt ideal. so there are some areas that we just had to leave as is and some that we could make better. in order to not "body work" or have to detail the underside of the hood and bed insides we used rustoleum bed liner to blend and texture the areas. the dash had been "shaved" at some other shop, there was no budget to change it so we had to work with it. plans are to pin-stripe it in the future so it isnt so boring. there is also a plate that will cover the torched out gauge holes (also previously done). the bottom of the truck will be Harvest Moon Beige, its a VW convertible beetle color. single stage paint, again we did the best we could with what we were given to work with. |

Re: 72 shortbed...
Glad you're getting them fixed up, I bet they could have jumped body shops for years in Miami before finding you! Glad to know you're still at it too.
That dash is...special I'd be almost inclined to take pity on them and slip a stock dash in there.

Re: 72 shortbed...
thanks! yeah its not easy to find trust worthy body shops down here. im not a "body shop" but most customers prefer leaving as much of the job with me because they know what they will get. its just really really tough correcting others work, usually the customer is discouraged and running out of funds; furthermore my job is harder than if i started from scratch so now it cost more to fix it than to do it right in the first place.
i changed the pics into a sub folder so they lost there links. you can find them in my photo-bucket, i am not sure how to edit a post to redirect the links... http://s10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...rben/72%20C10/ |

Re: 72 shortbed...
here is an update, the truck is all painted. i went with a milk chocolate color, it is color matched to the vinyl that we will use inside. again this is single stage paint with just some extra clear mixed in for the last coat. its really nice as is but a wet sand and buff would not hurt.
the very next day we got the bed and hung the doors. now im wrapping up the brakes, air bags and other mechanicals. going to install wiring harness soon too and the stainless trim to split the two tone. its sure come a long way from when it arrived, and to think that last body shop was going to paint the whole truck orange... |

Re: 72 shortbed...
thank you guys, its sure turning into a good looking truck.
yesterday i got the rear brakes done and installed the rear airbags and put the wheels on it. we painted the centers in gold and so i put gold pinstripe tape in the center of the trim so to cover the original black line. today it was all wiring. new rebel wiring kit 9+3. got the dash all done, motor all done and all the other wires are ran to there place. |

Re: 72 shortbed...
wiring is done. now waiting on some air components to wrap up the suspension. motor is also running, needs exhaust. while we wait for the missing air components the truck will be taken to the interior shop. also added some peal and seal (not dynomatt) to aid in sound and heat transfer on the cabin floor and firewall. the front bench is a F100? or something, i lowered it by 2" and it fits perfect in the truck. the owner is staining and varnishing the wood and then ill paint the metal rails and rear wheel tubs chocolate to match. i raised the wood floor about 2 or 3 inches to clear the rear end when completely aired out.

Re: 72 shortbed...
Nice work! Can you give me the brand and part number on the pinstripe tape you used? That looks really close to the color used on the 77 trim.
