402 big block heads ?
hollo all , im fairly new here and have to say this place rocks ! great info and some really cool builds. So for my question, iv got a 72 20 custom with a 402 bbc and was wondering weather the stock heads are peanut port or oval or what , I'v done some research and not gotten a clear answer. i suppose i could get a gasket set and pop the valve covers and find the numbers , but figured id ask first. well thanks all for the great forum . oh and can anyone recommend a intake manifold that works well with stock heads ? im looking at doing a carb, intake and possible header upgrade on the old monster.

Re: 402 big block heads ?
Hello, I could be wrong, but I don't think the peanut heads arrived till after the '72 years. None of the big-blocks I have pre '73 are peanut ports. My manifold of choice for a mild driver is the Edelbrock performer, with a 750 Holley, vac. sec's. Hope this helps....Steve.

Re: 402 big block heads ?
Cool that's helpful thanks . Still leaves square and oval ports tho . I'm leaning toward an edelbrock intake and Holley carb . Thanks for the input

Re: 402 big block heads ?
If you have a 1972 BB they are not PP heads, you probably have 049 or 781 heads which are great heads. The Rec. port heads were only used on the special high performance motors like the 396/375, 427/425, or 454/450!These engines had solid lifter cams and aluminum intake manifolds and were not available in 1972.
A good intake would be a performer 2-0 or an old Edlebrock 396-C.These motors can make a tremendous amount of power. Good luck! |
