1972 GMC K2500 rear axle options

Does anyone know where I could find a breakdown of the rear axle options for my 1972 K2500? I have the D60 full floating 4.10 power-loc model. I replaced the brake shoes and found out the Autozone had a different shoe spec'ed for the truck than what was on it. The shoes on the truck were smaller than what auto zone had listed.

Thanks.

The only other stock axle would have been an Eaton HO52. From what I remember you cannot get brake parts for those anymore. Most convert to disc brakes nowadays.

I've seen 4wd trucks with 2wd brakes before. Maybe the same happened with 2wds. As Longhorn Man said, there are two sizes. I took a shoe into Napa and they have a book to reference...could find it in the computer. Don't ever let Autozone or Advance dead end ya.

advance auto couldn't even cross reference a napa part number on a fan belt for me last week. I was eeven talking to the manager and when I asked if he could look it up in the book he looked at me like i was stupid and said, "we don't have any books, all the info I need is in my computer."
Yeah, like my fan belt?

They only need the computer (with only their program). "WE" need the books, because the story doesn't end just because one place can't help us. "Can't get this fan belt from Auto Zone. Oh well, guess I have to junk it".

Re: 1972 GMC K2500 rear axle options

Years ago I bought rear shoes for my K20 (Eaton) from NAPA. The ones they gave me were too narrow, but they insisted the shoes were the right ones. The ones that actually fit were for a 1/2 ton, according to NAPA.

Re: 1972 GMC K2500 rear axle options

Thanks guys,

It ended up being the narrower shoes for my axle.

I think the wider shoes were for the Semi-floating axle not the full floating axle which is the one I have.

Might be different with Eaton... mine (full floating axles) has wide shoes.

Glad you found the right ones for yours.
