Disc swap questions
I have a 69 Chevy with 6 lug and drum brakes. I just bought a 72 Chevy rolling chassis with 5 lug and disc brakes. I have a few questions about swapping the parts over.
1-What is the easiest method to do this swap. I've heard about swapping crossmembers and was wondering how to do this. 2- The 72 is missing the brake booster and master cylinder. Can I set it up as manual disc or is the power booster required. Can anyone tell me the proper length push rod? 3-Can someone show a picture of the proportioning valve? There are 3 different valves in the back of the truck and I'm wondering if I have the right one. Thanks for any and all help with my questions. |

You do not have to have power brakes. There is manual disks, but beware, disks take more pressure to operate, and your leg will be doing more work. If you do stay manual, get a 71/72 proportioning valve. Also, if it were me, I would swap out the whole cross member. But it is a whole lot easier to do without the engine in the truck.

There is a picture of my 71 proportioning valve in the "post a pic of your truck" thread page 2, titled under the hood. I've heard that changing the upper/lower control arms works well for a swap. Hope this helps.

Ratrod 67:
I just recently completed my disc brake swap today. My 69 gmc had manual drums but i bought the front end off a 72 gmc who had discs. I didn't simply swap crossmembers, I just swapped the spindles basically. If my memory serves me correctly, all i did was replace my drum spindle with the 72's, purchased new upper and lower ball joints/calipers/discs. Be aware that when I completed the swap, I had to use the 72 ah what are they called, not pitman arms but the other ones, i forget, mind isn't thinking right now but as soon as i reload my camera program in my comp i can show you everything.
