Simple engine/tranny removal gone bad need help:(
Well we needed to do some work on the motor and replace a clutch and also do some work on the tranny but now were stuck, in a nut shell here's what's going on. I have a 307 mated with an sm 465 and we tried removing the transmission and motor as 1 but the shifter bump would not clear it so we tried taking the top over off by putting the shifter back in(buddy took it out) an put the tranny in reverse and then we removed the shifter again an unbolted the top but couldn't get the top off it moves up but won't completely come off (somethings catching it) but now the shifter when we put it back in won't move to any position an now I don't know what gear if any its in. Now the only thing to do I think is remove the bell housing from the motor and I'm wondering the step by step procedure, and everything is disconnected and there both just sitting there if that helps. Today was a crappy day so let's here some good news

I too wanted to pull the engine/trans as a unit on my wrecker but couldn't for the same reason. I guess they aren't mean't to come out that way. ?? I ended up just pulling the engine and then removing the trans after. Since I'm doing a full body off resto, I'm going to put the trans in before the cab goes on to simplify things a bit.

Yep last night I was telling my father shoulda had Todd come out. I just talked to him an his way makes a lot more sense.
The tranny is hung up on the bellhousing cross member as of right now an that's what's stopping it all.

I had the whole front clip off mine and still couldn't get it to come out.

I have never seen one stuck but without the front clip and core support removed I've never been able to pull them together. Those granny low trannys are just too tall to clear at a angle. You might be stuck with removing the core support and pull it straight out the front to figure what's up why the tranny in hung up.

The only way I've ever done it, successfully, is to remove the tranny from the bell housing and then remove everything else.
The first time I replaced the clutch, I tried pulling the transmission and bell housing off the engine in one piece and couldn't get it to budge. We pried on it for an hour before removing the tranny from the bell housing and then removing the bell housing from the engine.

How do you remove the bellhousing from the tranny when two of the bolts are on the inside?

I was able to do it by jacking up the whole truck and placing it on jack stands. It was a pain because all I had was a floor jack and I had to raise it in levels for safetys sake. I forget how high I had to go, but there was no way it was coming out with the truck on the ground.

It ain't easy. I remember thinking the same thing the first time I did it. It's been too many years since the last time for me to remember the specifics. I think it involves dropping the flywheel cover and contorting yourself into the bell housing space to get to them.

When I did mine, SM465/350, I removed the top cover of the tranny because I couldn't get the shifter handle off. Pulled the engine and tranny as a unit with the front clip off without problem. You have to have the tranny partially shifted from N to reverse to remove the cover, or put it on.

how hard is it to drop the flywheel cover? that's what sucks my buddy took off the shifter and now we cant get it back in in the right position. how hard is it to disconnect the bell housing with tranny attached from the motor?

If you are talking about the dust cover on the bottom it is easy, if I remember right the starter has to be removed.
The last time we did it, which was last year, removing the dust cover and unbolting the bell housing from the engine seemed to be straight forward. We did it on a 350 and a 454.
