Angry pulling my hair out. Front bumpstops!

67 crossmember 76 everything else front end. I'm spending more money on bumpstops than gas these things won't stay in. I've evn ruined 2 good tires. Only the drivers side falls out 5th one in 6 months I'm using energy suspension poly bumpstops I've tried glueing them in I've tried screwing them in. I'm about to run some steel through one and weld it in. It does touch the bumpstops at ride height. I love the way it rides and handles with this setup I just cant make it last. Do I need to bite the bullet and get nw springs shocks and some drop spindles.......

I see in your sig you have a 4/6 drop. How was that acquired up front? You will probably need to remove the B/S mount and build a new one.

cut springs in front. Drop springs out back.
factory bumpstops didn't fall out, they rotted and split.

That's why I asked. That's 2x to much drop from a front spring. Your pounding the snot of of the stops.

Is your truck riding on the bump stops all the time?

riding on them not so much but def no clearance.
even sitting on the bumpstops the trcck rides pretty nice. Way better than the wet sponge it was before.

drill holes in the bumpstop to make it more pliable?

Re: pulling my hair out. Front bumpstops!

yup... need to be dropped like that with conjunction of spindle and spring. Dont need to ride on the bumpstop either. when you do that you are not getting enough suspension movement and the stops are taking the load.

Re: pulling my hair out. Front bumpstops!

HOLY smokes batman!!

4" cut off the front spring???

you need to buy a 2" drop spring along with a 2" spindle to remedy this.

Good luck!!

Re: pulling my hair out. Front bumpstops!

Each of my previous rides had 1-coil cut from original springs (2-3" drop). On the 68, I had about .500-.750" clearance between the bumpstop & x-member. On the 74, it was .500" max.

How much can you cut out of a 2 inch drop coil from early classic?

That's a vague question. If it's a 2" drop, & you cut 1-coil, your @ approx 4-5" of drop which is too much 'spring only' drop. You would need to cut less but how much is dependant on age of springs & vehicle weight (there's no 1 right answer).

These coils are brand new they have been on my truck for about a month. Weight wise....idk....its a c20...is there a safe cut? I don't want to have the problem this guy is having but I do want to drop it because I'm putting two inch drop blocks in the rear with my four inch drop coils.

I do not recommend more than 2" of drop using coils. You should combine spindles w/drop coils. If you go more than 2" of drop (cutting a 2" drop coil is more than 2" of drop), you will most likely encounter the exact problem the original poster is having.

Re: pulling my hair out. Front bumpstops!

half an butt is all I have left. Building a house, keeping the boat running and fed, plus a handful of other hobbies and a woman thats out of work doesn't leave me in a real good position to be buying a new suspension for my truck.....that I have to drive to work.

Re: pulling my hair out. Front bumpstops!

all I am saying is if you keep buying bump stops then eventually you will have spent what it would have cost to do it right the first time.

Buy once. Cry once. Go cheap. Forever weep.

Re: pulling my hair out. Front bumpstops!

I take it that you find out the bump stop is gone when you start feeling the metal-to-metal thud on the drivers side? Is cutting the bump stop mount all the way off and adding one directly on the control arm out of the question?

I don't know if this will allow too much travel in the suspension though in your situation...

Thats the route I took....ct the bumpstops off the lower arm, & used traction bar snubbers for the new bumpstop. I only cut 1 ring on the coil tho... crazyL

Re: pulling my hair out. Front bumpstops!

anybody else find it odd that the drivers side has gone through 5-7 bumpstops and the pass side worked the 1st time? Kinda makes me think my setup wasn't quite as half assed as some suggest. Could be the result of a leaky ps box? Poor people have poor ways

Very possible if the bump-stops were rubber as oils/petroleum products can deteriorate rubber quickly.

Re: pulling my hair out. Front bumpstops!

I've got a new style bumpstop in the mail, bolt in.

when the bs falls out/gets ripped in 2 it has more body roll and you can hear and feel metal on metal around corners and bumps...

I've been reading the thread "make it handle" that was a biiiig mistake. Bye bye money.

right now I've taken out the pass side bumpstop also so at least it's eually sloppy both directions.
