How many build their rides that do not do this for a living?
I want to see how many of you guys that's not a professional or does not have a place of business, build your trucks from your garage, shed, driveway, barn, etc, etc.
I've seen a lot of you that's building but you'll seem to have a shop with all the tools to get things done fast. I've learned a lot for the pros but want to see the backyard builders. Tri5

Re: How many build their rides that do not do this for a living?
Tri5Nerd, I work on mine in a 18'x 18' garage and is way to small for all the things I have. I want to add on to the front about 18' x 24' if the township will let me.

I do everything in my 1 car garage. (3 car garage when my wife is at work and I move my 53 out.)

Re: How many build their rides that do not do this for a living?
I'm de-rednecking my '56 pickup in one end of my garage, and rebuilding my '55 Bel Air in the other end, with 3 other cars parked in between. 24X58 overall, and kinda small. I'm a factory worker by trade, just trying to keep myself interested in life with this 'hobby'.

I'm building mine in my 2 car garage. I'm not a professional I work in IT but I have always been mechanically inclined.

Re: How many build their rides that do not do this for a living?
I work in IT and have always been mechanically incline, I will usually look at something and then do or make it just from site, the dimensions might not be exact but it will be pretty close.
The good part about me taking all 3 bays of the garage is that I have a agreement with the wife, It keeps me close to home and out of trouble... Plus I also do all the honey do when the time comes. This is my first build project although I've had VW bugs running 11 seconds in the quarter mile way back when. Tri5

Re: How many build their rides that do not do this for a living?
I'm a power company truck mechanic so that means I work on everything from weed eaters to large cranes & utility's trucks and everything in between!
But my build is the first restore job I have ever encountered, and the body work I'm doing myself and is the first time doing body work! |

Re: How many build their rides that do not do this for a living?
I am a Lexus technician by trade. I have been into hotrod stuff since I was a kid. Dad bought me and my twin brother a 51 Chevy 5 window P/U in 1978. We were 14 years old. We still have it. It has been finished about 5 times I enjoy the hobby of doing everything myself. The finished project is not my biggest joy---The journey of the build is. I need to start a build thread for my 54 5 window Chevy.

Solidaxel,
I had a 1UZFE 4.0 V8 and trans and gave it away. I have a .040 over 500 Caddy in it for the moment. I don't want to hijack this thread. I will make a build thread soon. Jeff |

Re: How many build their rides that do not do this for a living?
I'm doing mine in my 3 car garage but the wife's car gets one stall and my brothers 54 is in one so I work in one.
Before my disability I was a printer. Always worked on my own stuff though. The body work is all new to me. Kim Last edited by Kim57; 06-04-2011 at 08:26 PM. |

Re: How many build their rides that do not do this for a living?
Well now it appears that there are much more backyard builders than pros here. I thought that there were more pros here because I see so many pictures of builds in fab shop or other auto shops.
Again, I have a lot of respect for the pros because it how you earn your living. Tri5

I'm like Tri5nerd, in the fact that I deal with software but, I've always been mechanically inclined.
I'm doing mine in 1 stall of a 2 car garage. My wife's car goes in the other stall. |

I put mine together in the driveway and back patio. I recently relocated to Virginia and have a two car garage but no truck! Moving it wasn't part of the relo package so I'm saving to have it shipped here. If it's not soon, I may need that shrink!!

Re: How many build their rides that do not do this for a living?
Not sure how I fit into all this, as I am far from a professional, yet I have a 40x 70 foot shop that is bigger than some auto body shops, and I have just about every tool I need at hand. I had trouble finding a good picture of it, but I just extended my upstairs loft to hold more parts to get stuff out of the way on the main floor. Did I mention it has 22 foot ceilings?

When I was young and single I rebuilt my dragbike in my apartment over the winter then realized I couldn't get it out the door with the wheelie bars I have enjoyed working in high end restoration shops with everything I needed at hand all the way to doing a frame-up out of a 3 sided shed with a gravel floor. You are doing the same thing, just need to be more resourceful when you have less. Always enjoyed working on my projects regardless of where.
