another one being crushed :(
so i asked my nighbor today who is a local scrap guy if he gets any 60-66 chevy trucks if he would tell me. he told me he just got one yester day! and said i could take some stuff off if i wanted. well i went to go look at it and told him i wanted the hood and acouple other little things he said ok to that but when i asked for the bed he said no to load some more metal in it. the truck was pretty rusty cab had some big whole and front fenders were good. the bed was better than mine though. but on a better note he said the lady he got this one from had another in better shape so hopefully he will let me take more off that one i am giving him a couple blown up motors and scrap metal to sweeten him up

Man, a lot of people could use a lot of parts off that truck.

Re: another one being crushed :(
If the bed is better than yours, see if he will trade. He probably wouldn't care as long as it held his other scrap metal.

Re: another one being crushed :(
Offer him money for the whole truck and tell him you'll let him scrap anything you don't need. Scrap price on the truck can't be more than $500 or so. Might be worth it for you to get it, part it out of the good parts and then let him scrap the rest.

Re: another one being crushed :(
What a shame. It’s hard to believe scrap yards would crush something like this in this day and age. I didn’t think metal prices were all that high at the moment to make destroying something of this vintage worthwhile.
I suppose a lot of good trucks met their fate with the clunker law. Of course it breaks my heart when I think of all the cherry cars that were crushed back in the 60’s and 70’s. Many “old” cars were in the junk yard for no more than a bad transmission or bald recaps, so the owner would junk the car and the yard would pile them 2 or three high and flatten them out within a week or two. Re: another one being crushed :(
The exterior of that truck ( with the exception of the cab corners) is better than the one I have now. That bed is primo compared to my crappy bed.
Work out a deal with that guy. Tell him that you can part out the trucks he finds and he can make money in two directions, on the parts and on the final scrap. If he's a wheeler-dealer, then he'll see your logic. Right now, I see a bunch of potential dollars in the bed, doors, hood, tailgate, steering wheel, cluster, and other little things. I'll bet that if you add it all up, it might be money ahead over the scrap value of those parts. Plus, there won't be good parts going to the scrap yard. I've dealt with some of those scrappers, and they sadly do see the value from a restorer's point of view. I'll take the fender emblems if they are still available!

That makes me sad.
That, and when Hollywood smashes up a bunch of vintage Detroit steel to make some horrible movie.

I have all of those items for sale in same or better condition except doors (legally, on here and locally, on craigslist) and have had no takers even at obo. I am not picking on your comment just making the observation that "seeing potential" doesnt exactly fold like money. |

scrapping is a drug, its amazing what gets crushed or pitched and you try to save it all. I have a whole garage full of crap for my wife to throw away when I die.

Re: another one being crushed :(
Just to set the record straight, the clunker law did not include vehicles over 25 years old. Why do people distort history just to make a point? 55Chevy, huh? Our trucks were not included by a long shot. The law expired two years ago. You may hate the law, but hate it for valid reasons.

Re: another one being crushed :(
sorry for staying on this topic but like i said they were going to a SCRAP YARD not a dealer, the guy was a local who had no interest in anything but scraping steel he got busted a couple of months after for theft and trespassing and this truck being scrapped reminded me of this story... go to a scrap yard out in the middle of the desert on almost any given day and you will be amazed at how many chevys (of all generations, car or truck) are getting scrapped especiallywhen scrap is a little over $200 a ton

Anybody who trades a 55 Chevy for a $4000. Credit toward a new econobox deserves to be shot- For stupidity if nothing else. I can't help but wonder what your motivation might be for telling us a story like that.
