230 Rebuild? Is this normal???
Hey guys, recently had my 230 rebuilt. First off, Im not a performance engine know it all by any means and just wanted to keep my little 230 for gas efficiency in mind but I had built up a lil. I had a 272 cam installed, lumped the heads, bored it .30 over and installed roller rockers. I gave it to the engine rebuilder and when I got it home and took the plastic off to install the oil pump and covers and what not, I found that the two valves that where under compression looked a little strange. The two lifters under compression are sticking almost 1/2 an inch out of their bores. (hydraulic cam I am almost 99% sure) I just gave these specs to the engine rebuilder and gave him gobbles of money and let him do the work, and presto! I expect a perfectly rebuilt engine back, right? Is this normal??? Are the lifters suppose to move up and down out of their bores like this??

Re: 230 Rebuild? Is this normal???
I'd say those two lifters were up on their cam lobes, open, as they should be. Now, IF the engine is at TDC on cylinders 1 and 6, then, one set of lifters will be equally all the way down in their bores, the other pair will be raised up a very small bit, equally.
From what I see in the picture, nothing looks wrong, but I do not know where the 1 and 6 pistons are, and from the picture, I ASSUME they are not all the way UP in their bores. It is easy to get the 1 and 6 pistons all the way up in their bores, take a spark -lug out, doesn't matter if it is 1 or 6, use a flashlight to look down the plug hole and rotate the crankshaft until you see the piston stop moving UP inside the engine, then, go take a look at those lifters, 1 and 6 cylinders. |

I convert points distributors to HEI, real HEI, but have 40 years of engine and drive train experience, at factory tech level. I also design/revise engine packages for Ducati Corse in the MotoGP race team division. My rider and I just moved form 6 years at Yamaha MotoGP, to Ducati, now, Ital rider, Ital bike, Ital fans are going bonkers. I am very glad to be Irish.
