Has anyone seen these before

or have I just led a sheltered life? This is a GMC cluster ('72 I think) and it has adapters to use the old style bulbs in it, but only in some of the locations.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by that. I have 9 or 10 instrument panels and at least 3 of them are GMC's. I just picked this one up and it is the only one I have that has the taller bulb holders with the old style bulbs in it....

I see what you're sayin'. Never noticed it before, but since my dash is out, I'll have to look and see what I can see.

I agree...most have the shorter style, but I've had some with a few taller and some with all taller holders in them (but only a couple out of over 50 dashes)

Could that be a #168 Bulb/Holder as compared to a #194 Buld/Holder?
I know the #158's are supposed to be Brighter, but I went to LEDS on my Gauge Cluster:

My 70' k-10 had those same exact tall socket/bulb style, It was also the orig cluster. I have also seen that style in a 69' c/50 that i snatch the gauge cluster for the tach.

Yes but eventually the Exterior will be painted Green, so I was using some Forward thinking when I switched all my incandecent Bulbs, over to LED's.
I ran some Green Colored Glass #194's in my 67 C-10 back in 2005, and there wasn't even a comparison,as far as Brightness!

Not sure of the rhyme or reason on when GM used what where. It's one of those mysteries in life. I've never seen the topic discussed here before.

A #168 and a #194 will plug into the same socket. The #168's are 2 candle power brighter.

Re: Has anyone seen these before

My daily driver for years was a 1994 Ford Escort. When I had to replace the heater core I had to remove everything between the seats and the inside of the firewall to get to the heater core. While I had the dash cluster in my hands I figured it was a wonderful time to test all the cluster bulbs and replace any if necessary. I was surprised to find they were all 194s which I "stock" in my shop because my truck and my Chevelles use alot of those suckers. The holder for the bulb was very similar to what my truck has.

Really long story short, I'm wondering if a previous owner found a bulb holder from a different/older/newer/other make that fit the slot and held the bulb. I never tested one of my 94 Escort holders in a truck cluster or vice versa. It is a simple "circuit". If the bulb holder stays in place and completes that 12V circuit, it is going to light up on command. I'm guessing there are many other years/makes/models that have similar 194 bulb holders that will fit that hole.

I bet in 2008 when I finally retired that car with close to 300,000 miles there weren't too may other 1994 Escorts with working "SHIFT" lights in the dash.

Are the #168's the tall ones or the short ones?

As stated in my first and second post these taller bulb holders take the OLD STYLE bulb. I get the impression that some didn't catch that. I went out and snapped another pic...

I'm sticking with my guess. A previous owner found a different make/model/year that had bulb holders that fit. In all the clusters I've handeled over the years none had bulb holders like that.

mine of course had those bulbs...easily could have been someone having extras and replacing with these when their bulbs burnt out....

Re: Has anyone seen these before

per the manuals, 194 for the back light, 168 for the directionals.
My second truck (well worn and abused 69 GMC) had a couple of those in it... I was told that sometimes shops/dealers would install what they have on hand to make them work.
