1/4 mile times with ls swap
What kind of times are yall running? post up engine/trans/rearend setup
im mostly curious about what type of rear suspension setup you guys run. just lowered, 4 link, trac bars ect. im picking up a 84 shortbed with a 5.3/TH400/12 bolt has a 3800 stall and 3.73 gears. im excited to get into this project just curious what i can expect out of it. |

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
is the engine stock or modded, are you running DR's or street tires? Can you drive? There are alot of factors in terms of quarter mile times. Weight?
I know its not as helpful as posting a time (I haven't run my 66 yet), but you may get a WIDE variety. There are members into the 10's, but I'm sure there are some full weight trucks with stock 5.3's in the 15's.

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
the one im picking up is a stock engine, full weight pickup. with what its got in it, i should be runnin 14s, which isnt even worth my time at the track haha ill be setting it up with a cam and spray, but all the hp in the world is useless without traction. even running slicks you are limited, if the truck does anything besides moving forward (i.e.squats, raises up in the rear) then you are losing forward momentum.
ive ran a multitude of vehicles down the 1/4, 04 gto runnin 11.90s and many many passes on my 08 1000rr running 9.40s. i just like to do things once, i dont want to put trac bars on it when i should have 4 linked. rather do it right the first time so im looking to see what everyones setup is! |

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
Got a bud with a 84 SWB with a 502 sprayed. He is very happy with his 9 inch Ford narrowed, setup with a 4 link and coil overs. We had to fine tune the coils a bit. Very sweet off the line

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
forgot your newer trucks were leaf spring'd, in that case you probably won't be happy with track bars only. 4 link isn't that hard to do if your not afraid of some fab, and the track is your main concern.
for a truck thats just a driver track bars would probably get you through tho.

not 1/4 but on a set of 26" DRs mine went 8.8 @ 80 1/8th mile and 7.8s @ 88 on 100shot.

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
Did you check out the racing section on this web page? There is even a link called suspension 101 that I started and never finished that has some helpful info on how to get these things too hook. There are also a lot of knowledgable guys in that section that might have a little input for you.
My old times are in my sig, that's with a 347 cubed motor, a 4L80E, 4.56's and a 30" drag radial.

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
Well mine has some restrictive headers and y pipe as well as a bad hot air intake thats sucking in hot radiator air, as well as a really rich tune. Anyways it easily ran a 13.5 @ 100. I'm almost 100% sure its got 12's in it with a tune and some other stuff. For suspension its the stock 69 coil spring 12 bolt rear end setup 3.73 gears with a posi. Engine build is in my sig.

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
Thread revival!!! Haha
Took my 85 to the track last nite. With pretty much a stock 5.7 ls engine with cai and exhaust it ran a 14.6 at 98 mph. I am running the stock open diff with 3.08 gears so my short time sucked. Looking to swap a set of 3.42 gears with a LSD unit soon. Should aid in my times... Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
I would be surprised if the gear change gives you much off your ET. A good tire and posi will help for sure. Once you do that, a converter would really wake it up.

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
Just remember to figure in your tire height when selecting your gears. Tall tires make it seem like you have less gear and shorter tires make it seem like more.

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
A 2500 rpm stall might as well be stock, especially if it's stock diameter.
My 3400 9.5" Yank still feels really tight. Your truck would be a lot of fun with a 3600-3800 stall.

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
My billet 258mm/10.25" CircleD convertor was ordered as a 3000-3200rpm stall, and wound up roughly 2800rpm actual. I hear this is common. I am considering having it restalled (1free 1st yr) to 3200-3500rpm or so depending on how things go when I finally get it to the track. My d/r's are 30" tall but may get replaced w/28's.

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
No the stall speed is just fine for what I plan to do with the truck. I was digging through the tune today as I was having a problem at the track with the truck falling off around the 100 ft, so i did a heavy log all the way through 2md and found that I missed changing the speed limiter, so the truck was hitting the 98 mph limiter just a tick before the 1000 ft and just holding.. haha noob mistake on my part. now its fixed might hit the track again before the summer is over and see how it does... planning a locker soon so that will help a lot.

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
Cammed LS1 with 750 Holley carb, 700R4 with 2800 stall and 4.11 gears. 29" rock hard street tires(for now). Truck weight is under 3600lbs before my fat butt gets in. Stock suspemsion lowered 4.5/5.75 with ECE springs/spindles. In the video above, I spun through first gear, it shifted into second while spinning, spun most of the way through second gear before finally getting traction, crossing the line with the engine spinning close to max rpm in third gear. Even with all that, it ran a 14.15 at 97.98mph. I believe low 13's is very possible if I can hook and manually shift it. Those were just fun runs on Power Tour, so I just put it in drive(not OD) and let the trans do what it does. My engine seems to make TONS of power at lower speeds but tends to weaken at high speeds, which indicates the fuel system isn't keeping up. I don't spend much time in the upper rpm ranges at high speeds, so I'm not too concerned with that for now. I do plan to eventually tune the carb with an A/F ratio gauge.

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
5.3L, factory ECU tuned by me with EFI Live, 317 heads (wouldn't do again...WAY too lazy out of boost), LS6 cam, Borg Warner S471 turbo, non-intercooled, water/meth, 60 lb injectors, Bosch 044 pump, 3.73 posi rear, 4L80E, Yank 3400, 275/60/15 MT Drag Radials, 4230 race weight...oh and it was lifting the heads....lol. I didn't care about cutting a good reaction time...just wanted to beat my buddy in the yellow dodge. Still had vacuum brakes at the time, so it would push thru the brakes and I couldn't build ANY boost on the footbrake = super lazy from a dig.
11.95 @115 was my fastest on this combo.

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
Just a little food for thought for some of you regarding gears vs converter.
First running made roughly 410rwhp through a locked 3,200 rpm converter + 26" drag radial + 3.73 gear + 3,900lbs = best of 1.89 60' and ran 12.3x Next time out made 420-430rwhp through a locked 4,500rpm converter + 30" ET street +3.73 gears + 3750lbs = best 60' 1.67 and ran 11.96 was still in 2nd through the traps. Next time out made 449rwhp through the same locked 4,500 converter + 30" drag radials + 4.56 gears + 3,650lbs = best 1.67 60' and ran 11.578 In my case, gears almost seemed negligible but noticed it pulled a couple degrees of timing on the hit. Took it back one last time with the old combo. Everything the same as last time but race weight 3,525 and no timing being pulled on the hit = 1.60 60' and 11.45. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
Put an 80e in it and use the lock up while towing. I agree you shouldn't go 4,000-5,000 with the verter but 3,200-3,600 with a short 1-2 shift and an almost instant 2nd lock up. If you use a truck PCM, you can program the tow/haul feature to do something like that. Just food for thought.

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
I already have a nicely built 4l60 in it. Everything is fine with it, except I am fighting with the converter lockup. Any time it drops below 20% tps it will unlock. I have set it to where it "should" command it to lockup 2 mph after 4th gear shift and stay in lockup unless it sees 0% tps and it still unlocks. I cannot figure it out, I've had 3 different tuners look at the tune and nothing changes it. I have verified wiring, all the electronics are brand new and verified to be working properly. I am at a loss... As it sits, the truck tows just fine cruising and from a take off, I just figure a little better gear will help with a take off. Mostly I need some sort of locker or limited slip as right now one wheel peels suck.. haha I have a unit from a 70's camaro just having a hard time dishing out $300 for axles plus gears, bearings, and the parts to freshen up the unit..

Re: 1/4 mile times with ls swap
What year pcm? What did it come out of?
I can try and find a file in Hptuners repository and see if I see anything that would cause that. I am assuming you don't have hptuners and the ability to send me your current file. Posted via Mobile Device

No i am using efilive to tune with. I can send it to you if you want to download the software, it will allow you to view it but not change it. The ecm is from an 05 3/4 4x4 truck.
