71 shortbed

my granddad bought me a 71 chevy c/10 shortbed today. it had been sitting in a guys yard for 10 years. both rear brake drums were locked up, and it had 3 flat tires. it had buick wheels of some sort with white wall tires. all we did tonight was replace the front wheels and headlights, and removed the overhead console the guy made. hopefully i can get pictures up tomorrow.

Got the pitman arm free, but the steering shaft isn't wanting to play nice. Also got the radiator sitting in the core support to test fit hoses, and I should be able to make the lower hose work, but will have to try something else for the upper. Overall She's coming along pretty well though, I'm happy with the progress.

Re: 71 shortbed

the seats in it aren't attatched right now, but we got them out of a mercury grand marquis that we are going to scrap.
the straight six probably isn't staying, we have a small block v8 in the garage, and we are going to put in an automatic instead of the 3-speed.
it was 3 on the tree, but the guy who had it put the shifter in the floor.

He was in Wisconsin and we were in California.
Enjoy the time with BOTH your Dad and Grandpa.

Very true my friend, very true.
I worked at a floral shop from age 14-16 and saved up my money to buy my 1st 71 c10....long story short, i had to sell it for mortgage purposes.
fast forward to 2006 and the '70 GMC came to me for $500...it's been garaged ever since and I'm finally rearranging some things on it to have it ready by next summer.

Re: 71 shortbed

Sorry I haven't updated in a while, I'm going to upload a bunch of pictures of the progress since I last updated. The cab was painted and bolted to a trailer, and sat in the garage for a long time.

Here is the engine and trans mounted to the chassis as of late August 2013. It is a 283 small block with power pack heads and a 327 cam. It was last used in my moms 72 and has not been run since it was swapped out; The trans is a th400.

Here is a picture of the truck that was taken after we moved it from my granddad garage to an enclosed trailer. At this point all of the guts including the door glass is in the doors, one door handle is in (the other was on back order) as well as a distributor, fan, and a few other things.

Here are the seats and console, I don't remember where these came from either.

Earlier this month I started taking the front clip apart, it has been together since it came off of the truck in 2011. I may clean the fenders up and try to sell them as repair panels, if not, I will paint them and sell them as wall hangers. The core support and inner fenders are completely shot and the fenders are rough, but the hardware doesn't seem to be too bad.

Earlier today I started hanging the front sheet metal to get the core support in the right spot. The drivers side fender went on relatively well, but I couldn't get the passenger side fender on right after fighting with it for about an hour. My dad was away and my grandparents moved to Florida, so I will have to wait until my dad can take a look at it.

Here it is at the end of the day, I have one bolt on either side holding the grille on and the bowtie and marker lights are just sitting there; I wanted to see how it would look. With the core support and the fenders, I also bought a 2" cowl hood, but I will probably just wait until everything is painted to put that on. I will update as I make more progress

Re: 71 shortbed

So you made the move from plastic model kits to the real deal, huh? Congratulations!! I knew the day would come and here it is. It's a lot like building models except you use wrenches instead of glue and you have to take them apart first.
(Did the front wheels & tires come off your Mom's Caprice?)

Re: 71 shortbed

Only saw my granddad 3 times in my life....when I was 4, again 10 years later and then the next summer. He had some cars I would have liked to have, 51 and 53 Hudson's and some '56 Dodge station wagons. Only thing about that, is it took about 30 years for the "want" to hit and he was dead in Aug. '69.

My oldest grandson thinks he wants my '96 GMC, but it'll stay with me until my '69 is back together (at the least) or until I die. I'm thinking that my oldest son will get the GMC, while the '69 will go to the youngest son, since he had one before me and is also working with me at his house as we restify it.

Your grandfathers' ability to see that this truck and you belong together is a great thing. The fact that he and you and your dad are working together on it is something that you will not forget, nor will they. It will make your truck a special object, as well as a memory that you can not replace.

Good luck on your build.

Oh, those Buick wheels have been used on many of these and newer trucks. I'm sure that whoever put them on it, was very happy to have 'em.
