1 wire alternator ?'s
I bought a 100 amp Proform 1 wire alternator from jegs when I rebuilt my engine about 2 yrs ago.
too hook it up I just took the wire to the battery and hooked it up to the alternator output post, I left all the other wires unhooked, and w/ with the external regulator I just unplugged it, didn't do the jumping of terminals like I've seen here. The question I have is this, when I first fired it up it was fine, it kick to full charge around 1200-1500 rpm like they are supposed to do. lately, and this is since like last fall i would say it won't kick on till about 3K rpm when it's cold, but once it "excites" that one time it will come on around 1200 or so, any ideas? is it because I didn't bypass the old external regulator, or is the alternator going bad? any help would be great, thanks Ean

It is the alternator itself. You have it hooked up correctly.
The other style of alternator with internal regualtion needs the jumper wiring but your one-wire does not. Jim |

My one wire does the same thing. I just got used to sticking it in neutral and gassing it till the ammeter moves to the right while I drive to work in the morning.

thanks for the replies guys
so is the alternator going bad since I have to put it up to 3000 rpm for it to "kick on" the first time essentially? or is that just how these one wires are? maybe I should I just break down and get an old style external regulator? Ean

I makes me wonder why you have to go to 3k now, when you were only reving it to 1200 - 1500 RPM when it was new.
Double check your belt condition and tightness. |

my belt is new and nice and tight.
it might not be quite 3K rpm's, buts close, around 2600-2800 for sure I don't know, guess I could take it off and have it tested.

rpm
It sounds to me like your alternator is half-waveing. When 1 diode in the bridge opens, you have to spin it faster to get substantial output. Take it off & have it checked at a parts store where they check them for nothing........Zoomy
