Truck dieing carb problem how to fix?
My truck keeps dieing like i cant even drive it anymore first it was dieing at stop signs.And i had to put gas even while i was changing gears so it wouldnt die i had to constantly give it juice.I baught the truck months ago.But now its gotten so bad that even when i park it in front of the house it just stalls.My mechanic said we got to clean up the carb and replace spark plugs possibly.Something like that i hate this carb.What should i do in this case of a bad carb?

I can't help much because I have never rebuilt a carb, but I have bought a few.
Here is my take on carbs - they are like politics and religion - everybody has a different opinion and nobody is right or wrong or maybe everybody is wrong. My experience: carburetors carbon up and need cleaning and/or rebuilds periodically - maybe every 2-3 years based on your driving(more sustained high speed driving, longer between cleaning and rebuilds). I have had Carter, Edelbrock(basically a Carter), auto parts store rebuilds, and local carb shop "professional rebuilds". Probably 10 different carbs over 3 old squares in the past 20+ years. In my experience, a good quality Qjet rebuild or any factory rebuild is the best option. I don't think the average mechanic is really an expert in rebuilding carbs - it is a specialty talent that few mechanics have, especially now in the age of fuel injection. Check YouTube for videos on a Qjet rebuild and you will see what is involved with doing this. Here is a great tutorial on a rebuild and how carbs work. So, if you don't need to drive your truck daily you can get a rebuild kit and give it a try if you are mechanically inclined. Or, you can order a new carb online from a specialty shop - there are a couple of shops that specialize in Qjets and will rebuild them to your driving conditions (these will be the most expensive but probably the best ones you can buy) - do some research on this. If you buy a rebuilt carb I would be inclined to keep the old one so you can buy a rebuild kit sometime in the future and rebuild it yourself when your replacement carb craps out - you will have plenty of time to experiment with rebuilding. I would not waste any money on auto parts store rebuilds - they are junk in my opinion. NAPA might be an exception, but their price will likely be near a Qjet specialty shop price. Good Luck. |

One more thing, if you don't get another stock Qjet, your linkages and hoses (like the hose from your air cleaner down to the exhaust manifold) will most likely not line up correctly. If you have a spreadbore intake manifold you will need an adapter, which raises up the carb and throws off the connections. Non-Qjet aftermarket carbs are no better than stock Qjets, and the modifications you have to do make them a second choice to stock for me.

First thing I'd look for is a vacuum leak. Check all the hoses. Check the distributor advance diaphragm by disconnecting the hose and blowing into it. You should not be able to blow through. If you can, the diaphragm is shot. Replace it. If everything seems tight, run the engine and squirt WD40 around the base of the carb and around the intake manifold. If the engine runs differently when you squirt a particular spot you've found a leak. Carbs are usually trouble free and won't suddenly screw up. They're also easy to rebuild. I've done a bunch. Most bad running can be traced to the ignition system. Also, if you have a fast-idle solenoid, it could be bad. Check by watching while you power it up and down by disconnecting the wire with ignition on. If it doesn't extend, it's shot. Mine was not good. I just reset the idle speed.

check the sending unit for rusty cracked lines
run a temp line from pump to a gas can and try to idle checking gas lines and rubber hoses bits

Alright well i got good news and bad news i replaced the spark plugs and cleaned carb everything was solid and the truck was doing very good.But after a while the idle was being terrible it got so low that i had to put gas to get the idle up everytime or it would stall..so after a while we found something weird with the wirering In the engine compartmant there was a wire not hooked up for some odd reason.It happened to be the air condition that wasnt working and was blowing hot air before but when we plugged it in it was blowing cold and doing good.When i turned the air condition on to max for example..Theres a click you can hear and the engine or something kicks up.And the idle subsides.So after thinking the truck was solid and it was we took it to the car wash.And things took a turn it started to slow idle again it even stalled 1 time.The ignition was dead at that point untill i messed with the gear bar wich is a safety to turn the ignition i think.So after we finally got to the car wash at the perfect timing it stalled and was permanely deadI believe this is the ignition it has to be.What do you guys think??
