Want to go Auto. What do I need?
I would like to put an automatic in my 83 Scottsdale 4x4 with the Tractor tranny.....I mean 4 speed manual in it.
I know someone who has a transmission and transfer case out of a 79 all rebuilt. I could tell right away that the shifter on the transfer case was different than mine. It actually had a stick on it rather than the linkage mine has to the selector inside. So, would my transfer case mount to his TH350 tranny? would I need adapters or anything like that or would it basically just bolt right up? I like the manual transmission but it is seriously the lowest geared vehicle I have ever driven. Its like a tractor...60 mph is about all you want to go in it and it uses gas like its just dumping it on the ground. |

I did that swap years ago, I don't think you can use your t-case without finding the right adaptor. I used a th350/205 combo I already had that were made for each other. But I don't remember any difference in the t-case shifter. Maybe there was, but it has been a long time so I cant remember. It did seem pretty simple at the time. Might be I had to use a 350/203 transmission crossmember, 205 one was a little different. I bought a cheap auto floor shifter at Autozone, was cable operated so you could put it anywhere, had the longer truck lever on it so you could reach it. Looked cool on the floor I thought. Need a tranny cooler or a radiator with a built in tranny cooler. I used both.
Not sure what, if any, difference the final drive has. You're going from a 3 speed manual to a 3 speed auto, so gas mileage isn't going to skyrocket. I'd consider a 700r4 for that.

if you wanna go to a higher miles per hour change your gears in your axle, as far as transfer cases if the other one has a the 205 transfercase that is the bullet proof transfercase and it has the shifter instead of linkage and with that all you need to do is take that black box off your floor and get a shifter boot and the 205 will work, might have to drill new crossmember holes in the frame. i have the 3 speed manual in my truck and i can easily do over 85 mph (thats where the speedo stops) that is with 3.43 gear ratio in the axles and 33 in tires. and i dont have to dump it.

Well, I will think about it. I'm pretty sure my carburetor is shot. It has alot of dead spots in it. Im not even sure what size it is. I've been too busy putting the truck back together to really dig into the driveline. I've had it two weeks and just got it inspected yesterday.
I got the A/C working pretty darn good, the spark plugs, headers, exhaust, tires, trim, mirrors, tail light lenses, grill redone, carpet, door panels, windows, window channels, door gaskets and about 1000 light bulbs replaced just so I could drive it. It looks really good now! Now, I just have to get it running right. I could drive it as-is but it really really drinks gas and I'm pretty sure 8MPG isnt what it should be getting. It has pretty much no balls at all either so its not like its a hot rod. I do know that it does not have the original motor in it. I got the numbers off of it and its from a 70-72 Camaro. It's been rebuilt because the front stamped numbers are gone so its been milled. I don't know how long ago its been rebuilt though. The people I got it from thought it was the original motor. It actually came with a 250 inline 6. I'm almost tempted to find one and put it back in just to keep it kind of original. Last edited by bradford; 06-18-2011 at 08:19 PM. |
