ye olde hubcap poll...
Ok, I really like my 59 imp caps that i've had on the truck for awhile. But if you've been following a long in the LA Roadsters pics, I couldn't pass up the stock 66 cap deal. So, now the decision since I didn't buy them to make clocks out of them.... Go with the stock 66 or the 59 imp caps I already had on there? Sure, I can swap em around when the mood hits me, but just curious what y'all think looks better.
If I knew how to make this a poll, I would, but just interested in whatcha think between the 2... (and it's destined to be a stock looking hot rod, not a concours resto) Last edited by jocko; 06-19-2011 at 01:22 AM. |

Re: ye olde hubcap poll...
To my surprise, I actually like the impala caps better, at least with the white wheels anyway. Really. Plus, I'll even bail you out on those new caps you wasted your money on if you should decide against them.

Re: ye olde hubcap poll...
I appreciate stock hubcaps on a pure restoration, but this is an opinion poll about appearance. IMHO Chevy produced 3 beautiful/spectacular passenger car hubcaps - 1957, 1959-1960, and 1963. Everything else pales to insignificance. Although the earlier clip mounted truck hubcaps looked marginally better, the stock bump mounted hubcaps by comparison have no sense of style and look like they belong on industrial equipment.

Yep, those 66 caps are terrible. Send em my way... I like the truck caps on wider wheels.

Re: ye olde hubcap poll...
Ha! Thanks for the input guys. That's about 2 or 3 for stockers and 4 for imps. Hmmm. Maybe I'll run imps on the passenger side and stock on the driver side.

Re: ye olde hubcap poll...
ON the GMC models they was a bit of a mess up on a new hubcap for the '60 model years. From what I understand GMC was focusing a lot of attention of the '60 truck design and somehow forgot to roll out a new Hubcap for the truck. In the first 1/2 year the only caps you see in the ads were the '59 caps. SO technically if you have an early model years'60 you would be correct cap would be a 59 and no one could say a thing. See picture.

Add the beauty rings. Stock, but still cool looking. http://s660.photobucket.com/albums/uu326/Old64Suburban/

Re: ye olde hubcap poll...
i've thought of that ratskin, I like those on body color wheels - but i'm not sure i'd like them on white. i go back n forth - the other thing is that they tend to scratch the crap out of the rims when installing/uninstalling, so once I stuck them on there, they're pretty much required from then on. I pc'ed my wheels white and want to keep the finish in good shape - but I agree, trim rings do tend to look pretty nice with the poverty cap.

Re: ye olde hubcap poll...
IMO the look of your white wheels and 59 caps has reached a state of perfection which cannot be improved with more changes. If the new caps are so beautiful they have to be used, go buy another truck and put them on it!

Re: ye olde hubcap poll...
you might be onto something there... Good thing you weren't there prodding me on yesterday or that tan 51 would be in my garage now (or somewhere along the road between here and the show, but at least "closer" to my garage...

Re: ye olde hubcap poll...
i think either way looks good...i'm personally running the stock caps like the ones you bought...i switched to 5-lug & got stock-type 15" steelies that will allow me to keep using the caps...i'm going for an original appearance on the exterior...and as for the trim rings, mine was running them on the original 6-lug steelies...my truck is black & the wheels are black, so i think the trim rings enhance the wheels a bit...but with you having white wheels, i'm not sure how noticeable the trim rings would be...and i also understand not wanting to mess up the powdercoat

Re: ye olde hubcap poll...
DON'T DO IT! My super orig 65 Suburban bears the permanent scars of beauty rings that were installed for about a week just before I bought it. The orig owners son-in-law apparently thought they would help sell the old thing. Nice and deep, dark scratches all around the otherwise clean, untouched, factory painted wheels. Aaargh!

Re: ye olde hubcap poll...
I got my wheels blasted & powdercoated for about $30 per wheel. Hard to scratch them!

Think about the other hot rods in 1966 and the few years after that when your truck was but a young punk itself. Hubcaps, maybe.. but probably not. Stock hubcaps, not a chance with the possible exception of Impala SS full wheel covers. But I'll be the first to admit I am not really a hubcap guy.
