What Do YOU guys think about this...

I am rebuilding my 65 and was going thru some old pictures when a tought went thru my head...Why not finish it out similar to the way I did it in the mid 80's the first time I painted it.

I did it in a medium blue (GM Code 23 from the 80's) and painted the grill and bumper white. The wheels were just white 8 spoke wagon wheels.

My thought is to do that again with a few tweaks. The wheels would be the same Cragar wagon wheels, but the sizes would be 15x6 in the front and 15x10 in the rear. Not sure about tire sizes yet. I would lower it more and possible do air ride. Other changes would be mechanical not cosmetic.

What do you think?

Why not? If it's a look you like, then go for it. I try to not think about resale when building projects, I build them the way I like them. If down the road someone else does, too, then bonus.

Id do it.... just my taste and opinion would be do the wheel sizes like you said... but white steelies.

Sounds like my old 65 I had in the 80's. Med. blue with white bumpers, grille and white wagon wheels. Loved it! Girlfriend hated it! Dumped her!

If your truck was a 4x4 I'de say what your describing is spot on. But wagon wheels on a short step 2wd, I can't imagine.

Might be a case of you provin' us wrong though. Got any photos?

Personally I was never a fan of the wagon wheels. In my experience they were what a person got stuck with if they couldn’t afford the wheels they really wanted. But if you have fond memories of the truck the way it was in the 80’s, or dating in it when it looked that way, I’d say go for it.

I would not re-do what you've already done just for the sake of re-doing what you've already done. BUT! If you really like what you had already done and that is exactly how you want it to be today - then go for it. Bottom line - make it how you want it today, period. If that happens to be how it was back in the day, then so be it.

Strangely, I think the wagons whls look better on that longbed than I expected. But I wasn't expecting much - My vote (which means nothing) is for steelies, or something different than wagons. (maybe TT II's or Cragar S/S - the originals, not the 17 inchers that look like someone just stretched the rim and the spokes came along for the ride). I've always wanted to see some of the new satin center Cragar S/S on one of our trucks - I kinda like those things....

Thanks for all the responses. I am not sure what I want to do. I know that the wagon wheels will be about $200 for 15x6's and 15x10's less the caps and lug nuts. The steelies would require me to get the 15x10's made and that alone would be almost $200 without paint or powder coat. Some of this thinking is cost, some is just to get the truck rolling sooner, I might even do some truck ralleys to get going...

I have a polaroid picture i will try to scan and post of the truck from 1985. This version would sit A LOT lower...

Remember, you can always make changes later on when time and money permit. Like you said, maybe run the wagon wheels for now to get rolling, and then change them later. Tires and wheels are quite easy to change later on. That way you could put your money into something that isn't so easy to change later. The wagon wheels can be dressed up with different center caps, lugnuts, trim rings, and different colors.

I say: if it fits you, and it's what you like, roll with it. Personally, I dig a lot of stuff from the 80's, and my builds tend to echo 70's and 80's Hot Rod themes. It seems to attract a little more positive attention then the cars built to follow suit in current trends. I enjoy hearing things like "I haven't seen something built like this in years, man that's so cool!". But that's just me, and I am pretty confident in my own style. It's your ride, build it for you.
