I'm new here! Have some "longhorn" questions

First of all I'm glad I found this site! My Granddad gave me his 1972 Chevy Custom Deluxe about ten years ago. It needs quite a bit of work to restore , but the sentimental value will be worth it to me! I purchased an air cab and bed off of a GMC longhorn(not sure what year, but they were in great shape). My question is will the longhorn bed fit ok and "look right" on my truck? My truck is a long bed and this longhorn is 6" longer I know but it doesn't have the line up front by the cab. I'm so excited to finally get me a shop built and get to start on my Papa's old truck! I know hes gone now but he can smile down from heaven when I get it done! Thanks in advance! I'm sure I'll have lots more questions as I get into this project.

Re: I'm new here! Have some "longhorn" questions

Welcome to the board! A Longhorn bed won't a regular LWB truck because the wheelbase is 127" on a regular LWB truck and it's 133" on a Longhorn. Let's see some pics of what you have!

Re: I'm new here! Have some "longhorn" questions

that is correct, the added length of the longhorn bed is in front of the rear wheels (at the front of the bed to be exact) so if you were to put one on a normal LWB truck, the tires would be 6 inches forward of the wheel well centerline.

Re: I'm new here! Have some "longhorn" questions

Thanks guys! I assuming there won't be any issues with cab other than changing the emblems. You guys really don't want to look at any pics of a rust bucket yet!

Re: I'm new here! Have some "longhorn" questions

Would it be possible to move the spring hangers back by 6 inches to get the longhorn bed to work?

Re: I'm new here! Have some "longhorn" questions

I'm not seeing a 6" seamline up front on this bed. Did any of the Gmc Longhorn models not have this?

I'm not exactly sure. Do you know what number to look for in the VIN # that would tell year? I didn't see any #'s in it that even fit the model range.

I'm not sure about that. See if you can access the "manage attachments" through your iphone. If it finds the photo on your phones image type folder it may upload...not sure though.

Re: I'm new here! Have some "longhorn" questions

the throttle on a 68 is a push style with a rod
72 is a pull style with a cable
That is the main thing. If you have welding skills then it is a non issue.
If you don't weld, then you can pay someone, or swap to the old style.

Re: I'm new here! Have some "longhorn" questions

All the Longhorn beds had the seam. Unless some one has filled it in when repainting or something else to customize it.

you may not have a longhorn... does it have a wooden floor in the bed? (or the remains of one)

Re: I'm new here! Have some "longhorn" questions

Besides the seam on the outside, just measure the overall length lol Easiest way to be sure which bed you have
