68 Bench seat springs? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Does anyone sell the springs in a 68 C20 bench. I took my seat to have it recovered, but one of the v shaped springs that conect bottom to top on the outside edge of the drivers side is broken. The shop is pretty much just the fabric installation and foam, no mechanical repairs . Thanks. Jim

I'll have to go to the upholstery shop tommorrow and take a pic. It's basically a v shaped spring with an offset at the bottom of the v. It connects the top outer wire hoop of the seat to the bottom of the seat frame or hoop. They connect with a thin wrap of sheet metal to the outer hoops. When they brake, they allow the seat to sag on the outer edge, causing you to slide into the door when cornering. Like I said, I'll get a pic. Easier. Thanks LocDoc. Jim

That would be best. I have repaired 3 or 4 of them and there are a couple of different configurations. I guess GM used cores from a couple of different suppliers.

hi do you have any bench seat adjuster springs..i need large spring on drivers side-looks to be 12-14 inches lomg goes from back of seat bottom frame to drivers seat adjuster...spring that pulls handle back in place when you release it..and small spring that hold the rod up in center of seat

I have seen some that were repaired also. A good old upholstery shop knows were to get them. I used to know of a shop that had a bin full of them brand new. But he has since quit and just working on his own trucks and no longer sells to the public.

Yeh. The upholstery shop I'm at is mostly awnings and boat seats. He let me know that up front though. If I can get a spring, it won't be hard to replace. Its only held on with a couple thin sheet metal wraps. Thanks again. I'll be stopping by the shop when I go into town today for a pic. Jim

have you tried goin thru any junkyards?if you found a seat to get them off of the passenger side springs are better to get than the drivers side springs

I had the same problem. I welded mine back together. I also used part of the old back foam which is just about the right thickness of that area. I cut it to fit around the springs and wedged it in there for more support. Then I recovered it. It made a big difference even with new foam. You cannt even tell its there.

Sorry LocDoc. My wife had my digtal cam in her car at work. No pics yesterday. Did get 1.5 hrs of flying in instead, my first flight in almost a year. The upholstary shop man said he was going to throw some extra foam in that area also.

OK, finally got to the shop with a camera and the shop was open, owner there. Heres a pic of a good spring. Its the rusty looking v shaped spring with black arrow pointing to it. The broken one was misssing mostly so no pic of it. Thanks. Jim
