How much to shorten drive shaft?
What should I pay to shorten drive shaft (in california)? My last one on my 65 was $250. Was a 2 piece shaft, u-joint in middle and one on each end. Used old u-joints, I supplied new yoke. Seemed pretty high, maybe I am out of touch?

Re: How much to shorten drive shaft?
Yes, but as you know physics are different in California, and the mass of the drive shaft is more, so it is thicker steel, so it takes more rod and more electricity to weld it...Oh, wait, thats actually Jupiter, not California....Ok, so I dont know why exactly I pay more here in California. I think it has something to do with getting screwed....

Re: How much to shorten drive shaft?
And you didn't get new joints for $250. For $50 more they should have nickle plated a dash plaque and give you a kiss too. Sounds a little extreme. On ebay in the past years there was a guy in Ca. custom making shafts and shipping them for $175-$225 balanced but they were one piece shafts but he supplied new yolk and all for that price. That may not be out of line price wise though. A few members on the board do that kinda work. Let them chime in on the cost.

Re: How much to shorten drive shaft?
I paid $230 at Inland Driveline in Ontario, CA, but that was a 1 piece with all new U-joints and a new slip yolk.

Re: How much to shorten drive shaft?
I had a machine shop cut 3" out of one for my stepside about 10 years ago for a whopping $30 dollars.

Re: How much to shorten drive shaft?
65 for a 1 piece or 95 for a 2 piece is what we charge for a shorten and BALLANCE! No ujoints, no carrier bearing, no yokes, if it is a 2 piece we will check the center stub, bolt on yoke, and carrier bearing. I don't know what our 2 shops in california charge but I cant imagine much of a difference.
theirs no way I'd ever install a driveshaft that wasn't properly ballanced. You can if you wish, it does make it cheaper in the short run. If you don't ballance both pieces of a 2 piece driveline together as an assembly they are not ballanced.
