700-r4 T.V. cable adjustment
Ok, I have a question re: the adjustment of the T.V. cable for my 700-r4. I bought the Lokar throttle and TV cable with bracket. How do I adjust it? Do I set it to when its at half throttle it starts pulling on the TV cable? Thanks, Nik

Re: 700-r4 T.V. cable adjustment
Ok, my brain hurts!
Im stumped on this step, they are talking about the factory TV cable. They mention it "ratcheting out" to its set position. I have a lokar cable. no ratcheting happening there. I get that I set it at WOT, but im not grasping what position the TV cable is in when set at WOT... "You must "force" the "carburetor linkage" to its full W.O.T. position as shown by the orange arrow in the picture to the right. This action has "forced" the TV cable "slider" mechanism to "ratchet" out to its correct "set" position! The white arrow in the picture at right shows the TV "slider" in its new extended position."

Re: 700-r4 T.V. cable adjustment
They way I read it is the tv valve should be all the way in at WOT.
So set carb at WOT Pull inner cable all the way out which pushes the TV valve all the way in. Hook to carb. There should be no slack in tv cable at WOT. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 700-r4 T.V. cable adjustment
Ok, Perfect! Thats the way i read it too. But I was thrown off by the ratcheting comment that was made. Seems like the directions are WAY too long and confusing for the setting of it to be that simple.... WOT with carb, pull TV cable all the way out and set there. Thanks!
Nik hopefully I get this right and dont nuke my tranny!!! haha

Re: 700-r4 T.V. cable adjustment
the ratcheting on the stock type cable is just pushin the button on the cable housing and pulling back to take the slack out of the cable at WOT.
the dynamics are set my the length of the inner cable and the arm on the carb. it wont hurt to have a pressure gauge to check and read for little piece of mind.too Quote:

Re: 700-r4 T.V. cable adjustment
OK, so I set is as indicated above and I still have slipping. Im not sure whats going on with the tranny. Maybe drain it, new filter and new fluid will help. The guy that owns a local tranny shop gave me a little 5/16" rubber ball and lined me out on setting it up to hydraulically lock up. I need to drop the pan and hook up my cooler any way. Probably a good place to start

Re: 700-r4 T.V. cable adjustment
What carb are you running? Do you have the correction bracket to get the right ratio between throttle opening and the amount on tension on the cable? I have this for my 700-R4 and an Edelbrock carb and it works great!

I have the Lokar cables and brackets on my 54 and adjusted the cable just like the above. WOT, pull TV cable all the way out, lock down the cable stud.

Re: 700-r4 T.V. cable adjustment
I too have read til my brain bleeds.
And that linkage adapter is an important part. On regulating pressure of theSE trans. I also read that it doesn't take long to burn one of these tranny's up. With incorrect tv cable setup. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 700-r4 T.V. cable adjustment
Thanks guys! I have one on order. I will do the little hydraulic lock up mod the tranny guy lined me up to do. I tried to milk him for more info but I think he was at the point of not wanting to give out any more free advice and wanted to have me bring the tranny in. So, Ill do that to get the converter to lock up, install my cooler and new ATF and filter. Hopfully I will be on the road soon. I can almost taste it!

Re: 700-r4 T.V. cable adjustment
Chances are the TV cable is still too loose. Pull the throttle to wide open and pull the TV cable TIGHT. Lock it down at this point with the hex head luck ferrel thing, do not make adjustments with this piece. Drive the truck and check for slippage or not shifting fast enough. If the shifts are lazy or too soon tighten the cable at the 9/16 nuts and housing area where the bracket meets the carb. By tighten I meen to pull the cable tighter. If the trans holds the gear too long and will not shift, then loosen the cable. Make 1-1.5 turns at a time. It will take a while but it will work. I have the same setup on several vehicles and it just takes time to get it right. I use this setup on Edelbrock carbs without the bracket and have not had issues. That being said it is always better to buy the right part, ie the little bracket. Good luck.

Re: 700-r4 T.V. cable adjustment
Thanks, quigman! I will give that a shot. I cant believe that the last 1/16th or 1/8th that I could get would make the tranny slip that bad and not hook up. i had no idea how finicky these tranny's are!

You got my curiosity on this hydra lockup

Re: 700-r4 T.V. cable adjustment
Did you get that correction bracket, or just adjusted the TV cable all the way out at WOT?
I don't have the correction bracket and mine is shifting good. I bought my trans from a drag racer and it has a non lock up converter, so converting it back to lock up is at the very front of my to do list. I'm very curious about this hydra lockup also. Thanks for the link lazypineapple.

Re: 700-r4 T.V. cable adjustment
Ok, I dropped the ball into the solenoid lockup tube, buttoned it back up and took it for a spin around the block. Seems to drive ok. I ordered the correction bracket for the carb linkage but dont have it installed as of yet. The tranny drives well but seems to lug the engine and not downshift when I would like. I found myself just shifting from gear to gear and it working well. I am going to read that thread on hotrodders.com. Sounds like they are messing with the same thing that im doing... being cheap!
